Cossacks fall in five sets to De Smet

VOLGA De Smet rallied from a 2-1 deficit on Tuesday night to beat Sioux Valley in five sets at the Cossack Center.

The Bulldogs won set one and the Cossacks then won the next two sets. De Smet then battled to force a winner-take-all fifth set and won that set to take the match.

The Cossacks fell behind 5-1 in the first set. They would come back to tie things up at 8-8 and it was later tied at 14-14. It was then 16-16 and the Bulldogs then scored five of the next seven points to go up 21-18. Sioux Valley scored three-straight points to tie the set but De Smet responded with four points of its own to take the first set 25-21.

Sioux Valley flipped the script in the second set as the Cossacks went up 5-1. De Smet tied the set at 7-7 and the teams traded points until Sioux Valley scored four-straight points to go up 19-15. The Cossacks then led 21-17 and the Bulldogs went on a 5-1 run to tie things up at 22-22. De Smet then had set point at 25-24 but the Cossacks rallied and scored three-straight points to win the set 27-25 and evened things up.

The Cossacks trailed 10-9 in the third set and went on a 7-0 run to go up 16-10. De Smet fought back and cut the lead to 17-16 but Sioux Valley pushed the lead back to six and won the set 25-19.

De Smet led 14-9 in the fourth set. Sioux Valley came back to tie things up at 17-17 and each team scored a point to make it 18-18. The Bulldogs then went on a 5-0 run to go up 23-18 and won the set 25-21 and forced a fifth set.

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the fifth set. That lead grew to 10-5 and the Bulldogs eventually won the set 15-10 and took the match.

The Cossacks had 57 kills and 60 digs. Emma Gorvin had 15 kills and 11 digs. Lace Langland had 10 kills and six digs. Maci Licht had 11 kills and Abygale Degen had nine kills. Talya Vincent had 31 digs and Caitlin Russell had 22 digs. Macheala Gerasch had 26 assists and 14 digs. McKinley Schwab had 23 assists and six digs.

Sioux Valley is now 6-4 and will play in the Lake Preston Tournament on Saturday.
