Cossacks split two matches in Big East Tournament

VOLGA The Sioux Valley volleyball team split its first two games of the Big East Tournament on Thursday night at the Cossack Center in Volga.

The Cossacks beat Beresford in four sets in the first match of the night and then were swept by Baltic in the other. Sioux Valley is now 5-3 and will play in the third-place match in Beresford on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Sioux Valley won the first two sets and then closed things out in the fourth set.

The Cossacks were in control for most of the first set as they won 25-17. The Watchdogs put up more of a fight in the second set and led 23-21. Sioux Valley then scored two points in-a-row to tie things up. Each team then scored a point before kills from Lacey Langland and Elise Lemme ended the set and put the Cossacks up 2-0.

Beresford would extend the match with a 25-17 win in set three. The Cossacks didnt waste time in the fourth set as they went up 10-3. They would hold that lead for the rest of the set and won 25-20.

The Cossacks had 49 kills and 77 digs as a team. Langland had 14 kills and 10 digs to lead the way. Lemme had 11 kills and Emma Gorvin had seven kills and 15 digs. Caitlin Russell had 16 digs and Talya Vincent had 13 digs. McKinley Schwab and Macheala Gerasch each had 20 assists and six digs. Abygale Degen and Sienna Weiss had six kills and Maci Licht had five kills.

Baltic 3, Sioux Valley 0

The Cossacks lost in straight sets. The Bulldogs won by scores of 25-18, 28-26 and 25-22.

Sioux Valley had 34 kills and 59 digs. Licht had 11 kills. Lemme and Gorvin each had seven kills. Gorvin also had 10 digs. Vincent had 21 digs and Russell had nine digs. Gerasch had 19 assists and Schwab had 12 assists.
