BROOKINGS The Mission of the Month at Mission Coffeehouse at First Lutheran Church for September is Brookings School District Child Wellness Fund.
The fund is set up to support the physical and mental wellbeing of children. Caring for a child can positively impact the childs social, physical, and mental well-being.
Currently, the fund is mainly focused on children in these schools: Dakota Prairie, Medary, and Hillcrest Elementary, as well as Camelot Intermediate.
Money donated to the BSD Child Wellness Fund is stored at the BSD, and funds are used to purchase items the staff recognizes are needed for the children. Incidentials include but are not limited to: school supplies, personal items, clothing, shoes, BATA bus tokens, milk money, and miscellaneous items.
Money in the fund is also used to support the Brookings County Child Protection Team, consisting of various opportunities and support networks including children in foster care and their foster families. Collaboration on the fund started in fall 2021 with support from FLCs First Lutheran Church Belize Mission Team, Dana Martens (BSD social worker who serves students and families), Carleen Holm (counselor who works with children at Dakota Prairie Elementary, FLC member), and Chaundra Hilleson-Gayne (mother and FLC member).
