Sioux Valley tops McCook Central/Montrose in four sets in Salem

SALEM The Sioux Valley volleyball team improved to 4-2 on the season after a four-set victory over McCook Central/Montrose on Tuesday night.

It was 13-13 in set one and the Cossacks went on a 5-2 run to go up 19-15. Sioux Valley then led 20-17 and scored five of the next five points to win 25-17. The Cossacks pulled away again in the second set. It was 17-17 in the latter part of the set and Sioux Valley won eight of the next 10 points to secure the set victory and went up 2-0.

Sioux Valley fell behind 15-11 in the third set and then scored four-straight to make it 15-15. The two teams then traded runs and it was 25-25. Then a kill from Ella DeKnikker and a service error from the Cossacks extended the match as the Cougars won the set.

Sioux Valley bounced back from the set loss and dominated the fourth set. The Cossacks jumped out to a 12-4 lead and that lead increased throughout the set until they won the set 25-14.

The Cossacks had 49 kills and 81 digs as a team. Maci Licht led the team with 14 kills and six digs. Emma Gorvin had eight kills and 26 digs. Lacey Langland had 10 kills and Talya Vincent had 15 digs. Caitlin Russell had 13 digs and Sienna Weiss and Abygale Degen each had seven kills. McKinley Schwab had 27 assists and Macheala Gerasch had 13 assists and seven digs.

Sioux Valley will play Beresford in the first round of the Big East Conference Tournament on Thursday in Volga at 6 p.m.
