BROOKINGS Brookings High School will induct five members of the 2025 Hall of Fame Class at the 21st annual Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony during halftime of the Bobcat football game on Friday at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.
The Bobcats will be taking on Aberdeen Central and kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
Inductees were selected because they demonstrated exemplary accomplishments in educational sports as student-athletes, members of the athletics department staff at Brookings High School or contributors.
The inductees are split into five categories. Tim Ramey (1978) is the male veteran inductee, Laura Hietbrink (1979) is the female veteran, Phil Workman (2007) is the male, Tiffany Moe (2006) is the female and Jerry Kluess (1984-2004) is the coach. The 1989 girls track and field team, which won the state title and was coached by Kluess, will also be inducted.
Tim Ramey (1978)
Tim Ramey was an outstanding three-sport athlete at BHS. Ramey demonstrated incredible quickness and good footwork for a lineman. Ramey was a two-way player, an All-State offensive tackle and explosive defensive tackle for the 1977 BHS football team. Ramey also played fifth in the heavyweight class at the 1978 Class AA State Wrestling Tournament despite weighing less than most of the other wrestlers.
In addition, Ramey threw shot put for the Bobcats. He came in first at the South Dakota Athletic Conference Meet and won two titles at the regional meet. He set a Brookings High School record with a throw of 53 feet and 4.5 inches. As a junior, Ramey also placed third at the State Meet in the discus. Ramey won the Discus State title as a senior and set a Brookings record with a throw of 163 feet and six inches.
Laura Hietbrink (1979)
Laura Hietbrink was a three-sport standout and was selected 1978-79 BHS Most Valuable Female Athlete. Hietbrink was a key member of the 1978 Bobcat basketball team that finished with a 15-5 record and a second-place finish in the Eastern South Dakota Conference. When volleyball was a new high school sport, Brookings won the first Alpha V Conference Championship with an 8-0 record. Hietbrink contributed to Bobcat volleyball teams that were undefeated during the first three years of competition.
Hietbrink was an outstanding track & field athlete. She was an excellent high jumper with a personal record of four feet and 10 inches that is still ranked as the No. 10 jump in Brookings history. Gietbrink was also a member of teams that set the BHS record in the 4×200 meter relay (1:45.20), which is still the record, and the medley relay (4:13.80), which is third in Brookings history.
Phil Workman (2007)
Phil Workman earned 14 varsity letters. Workman lettered five years in basketball, setting a BHS career scoring record with 1,251 points, as well as 582 rebounds. He was the team captain and received Most Inspirational, Most Valuable, All ESD and All State honors. He also earned five letters and was a major contributor to the 2007 Brookings track & field team, who were the ESD Champions. He won titles in the 800 meter run (1:56.92) and the 4×400 relay (3:25.71). Workman won five individual ESD titles and was a member of relay teams that came in first five times. He set a BHS record in the 400 meter run with a time of 50.24 seconds and anchored a record-breaking medley relay team with a time of 3:34.87. As a senior, Workman played quarterback and linebacker for the football team. He earned Most Inspirational and All-ESD honors while passing for 862 yards and eight touchdowns and rushed for 267 yards.
Tiffany Moe (2006)
Tiffany Moe was a three-sport athlete. As a senior, Moe earned MVP, All-ESD and All-State Tournament honors by contributing 233 kills and 114 digs on the Brookings volleyball team. The Bobcats came in fifth place at the State Tournament that season. Moe won four letters in basketball as she scored 601 points, grabbed 261 rebounds and had 149 assists in her senior season. The Cats had a 22-1 record and repeated as ESD Champions before coming in third place in the 2006 State Basketball Tournament.
As a junior, BHS had a 20-4 record in girls basketball and earned the ESD title and came in second at State. Moes sophomore season, Brookings won the Class AA State Tournament and she was selected at the Most Inspirational Bobcat.
Moe also golfed on outstanding teams. As a sophomore, Brookings won the EST title and finished in second at the STate Tournament. In both her junior and senior seasons, the Cats won both the ESD and State Tournaments.
Jerry Kluess (1984-2004)
Jerald Kluess was a 1962 graduate of Mankato State University. From 1963-1984, Kluess taught in Hendricks, Minn. He was the boys head track & field coach at Hendricks from 1965-1984 and started the cross country program in 1972. He also served as the girls track & field coach from 1980-1984. Kluess was honored as the District and Region Coach of the Year in 1977 and 1980.
In 1984, Kluess was hired as a science teacher at BHS. He served as the head boys and girls track & field coach until 1998 and was the assistant coach from 1999-2004 while coaching the pole vault as well as seventh grade football. Kleuss coached 14 individual and four relay State champions, and guided the Bobcats to the 1989 South Dakota Class AA State Track & Field title. Kluess was selected on two occasions as District and Region Coach of the Year.
