Rhoden releases prison plan ahead of special legislative session in South Dakota

South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden’s office has released the plan for a new mens prison. The plan is the subject of a special legislative session on Sept. 23.

Thefive page documentincludes price comparisons between the states original Lincoln County site and the new location in Sioux Falls.

In a statement, Rhoden said, “This is a fiscally responsible plan that will give South Dakota a 100-year facility with necessary space to reform our corrections system.”

The governor’s office also released acomparison to a Nebraska prison proposal. The cost discrepancies between the two state prison projects came up during the prison task force proceedings.

Lawmakers will vote on the plan during the upcoming special session. Even with a $175 million reduction in cost, this will be the most costly state funded project in South Dakota history.
