BROOKINGS The Brookings volleyball team snapped a four-game losing streak on Tuesday night as the Bobcats swept Tea Area at Brookings High School.
The Bobcats (2-6) dominated the first set and then won two hard first sets to earn the sweep. Brookings head coach Erinn Thomas said she liked the way her offense played on Tuesday night.
I thought we passed pretty well tonight, which gave us options offensively. Our hitters made some really smart shots and we did a nice job keeping them out of system. That helped us control the flow of the match and earn the sweep, Thomas said.
Brookings won set one 25-15. The Bobcats then trailed 14-8 in the second set and went on a 10-4 run to tie things up at 18-18. It was then 22-22 and the Bobcats scored three points in-a-row to go up 2-0. Thomas said the way her team served the ball after falling behind allowed them to come back.
In that second set we were down 148, and our servers really stepped up. Each of them gave us a run of three to four points and that got us right back into it. Offensively we did a better job of finding open spots and placing the ball well, which helped us close it out, Thomas said.
Brookings would then win set three 25-23 and come away with the sweep.
The Bobcats had 29 kills and 45 digs as a team. Macy Even led the Bobcats with eight kills and 10 digs. Lily Thompson and Maddy Fickbohm each had seven kills. Taylee Connot had seven digs and Sloan McLagan had 12 digs. Kamryn Streich had 22 assists and eight digs.
Brookings will head to Rapid City this weekend for a tournament at The Monument at Summit Arena. The Bobcats will take on St. Thomas More and Dakota Valley on Friday. Theyll then play Mahpiya Luta on Saturday.
Thomas said she and her team want to take it game by game and not let mistakes pile up. She hopes the Bobcats can keep the momentum going out West.
On Monday we talked about taking things one day at a time, and I thought our team really bought into that. They trusted their shots to score points and we had much better energy tonight. I was proud of how we reset confidently after mistakes. Now were excited to head out to Rapid City. Its always a fun trip with great competition and were looking forward to building on this momentum, Thomas said.
