The Sioux Valley football team came away with a win over Baltic on Friday night, while Elkton-Lake Benton suffered its first loss of the season to Freeman-Marion-Freeman Academy.
Sioux Valley 54, Baltic 8
The Cossacks dominated the Bulldogs to earn their second-straight win.
Sioux Valley opened the scoring with 3:56 left in the first quarter as Wyatt Hardt ran it in from 28 yards out and Mitchel Guthmiller scored a two-point conversion to make it 8-0.
The Cossacks then scored 24 points in the second quarter. Hardt threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Tobin Squires and Braden Danzeisen ran in the two-point conversion. Hardt then scored on a 23-yard run and ran in the two-point conversion. The final touchdown of the half came on a three-yard run from Guthmiller and Logan Mahn scored the two-point conversion to make it 32-0 at halftime.
Danzeisen opened the second half with an 82-yard kick off return for a touchdown and Mahn ran in the two-point conversion. Sioux Valley didnt score again until there were eight minutes left in the fourth as Tyson Norgaard scored on a two-yard run but this time the Cossacks didnt convert the two-point conversion. Baltics Jackson Goehring then scored on a two-yard run and Elias Oakley ran in the two-point conversion to make it 46-8. Brendin Moe scored the final touchdown of the night for the Cossacks as he ran it in from 10 yards out and Cody Strenge scored the two-point conversion.
Sioux Valley had a 373-175 in total yardage. The Cossacks 332 yards on the ground and Hardt led the way with 104 yards on seven carries. Guthmiller had 11 carries for 96 yards and Norgaard had 81 yards on 11 carries.
Hardt was 2-of-5 for 69 yards and Damon Uecker was 2-for-3 for 45 yards. Squires’ only catch was the touchdown and Guthmiller had one catch for 33 yards.
The Cossacks are now 2-1 and will host Clark/Willow Lake next Friday at 7 p.m.
Freeman-Marion-Freeman Academy 42, Elkton-Lake Benton 28
The Phoenix outscored the Elks 21-7 in the second half to win in a battle of top-three teams in Class 9AA.
Riley Tschetter gave FMFA an early lead with a 29-yard passing touchdown to Karter Weber. ELB then tied the game with Colt Beck finding Myles Poindexter for a 33-yard score. The Elks then got a stop and Eliot Erickson gave them the lead with a 17-yard rushing touchdown and they led 14-7 heading into the second quarter.
The Phoenix tied the game with a 32-yard run from Luke Peters. Erickson scored again to give the Elks the lead back, this time it was from eight yards out to make it 21-14. FMFA would tie the game before halftime as Tschetter ran it in from 28 yards out and it was 21-21 at halftime.
FMFA pulled away in the third quarter. Peters scored a 43-yard touchdown and Tschetter found Tate Sorensen for a 35-yard score and the Phoenix led 34-21 heading into the fourth.
Beck threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Poindexter to cut the lead to 34-28 but then Karter Weber scored from a yard out and a two-point conversion put the game out of reach.
The Phoenix had 370 total yards and the Elks had 302. ELB had 189 rush yards and Erickson led the way with 145 yards on 17 carries and Beck had 44 yards on seven carries. Beck was 10-of-18 for 157 yards and Poindexter had four catches for 104 yards.
Taiton Boersma led the Elks defense with 13 tackles, and a forced fumble. Quintin Westley had nine tackles and Erickson had 8.5 tackles.
ELB is now 2-1 and hosts De Smet next Friday at 7 p.m.
