Roger Hobbie

Roger Stanley Hobbie, 89, of Flandreau, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on the family farm, surrounded by his children, on Sept. 1, 2025.
He was born on Sept. 24, 1935, in Flandreau to Oscar and Matilde Hobbie. Roger grew up on the family farm, attended Smythe Country School, and graduated from Egan High School in 1955, where he played football and basketball. After graduation, he purchased a herd of milk cows before being drafted into the U.S. Army, where he faithfully served his country.
On May 1, 1964, Roger married Ellen Kay (Mills) of Rapid City. Together they shared 56 years of marriage until her passing in December 2020.
A lifelong farmer, Roger cared for animals of every kind and raised a variety of crops with dedication and skill. Known as a natural problem solver and master fixer, he could repair or improve nearly anything. After retiring from farming, he continued working for Midwest Golf Cars in Sioux Falls and Von Eye Farms in Coleman. He also enjoyed hunting, traveling to Alaska, and never turned down a dish of ice cream.
Roger accepted Christ as his savior at age 11 and lived out his faith with quiet strength. For 62 years, he faithfully attended and served at the Wesleyan Church in Brookings. Remembered as a gentle giant, he was admired for his integrity, tender heart, steady prayers, tireless work ethic, resourceful mind, and unwavering devotion to his family and to Jesus Christ.
He is survived by his children: Cheryl (Gary) Brown of Watford City, ND; Charla (Rich) Holt of Rapid City, SD; Chanda (Brian) Wahl of Red Lodge, MT; and Chet (Angela) Hobbie of Wasilla, AK; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and siblings: Verna, Jerry, Norman, JoAnn, Diane, Glenda, and Gordon.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kay; parents, Oscar and Matilde; sister, Marlys; and nieces, Beven and Stacy.
Visitation will be held Sunday, Sept. 7, from 3:004:30 p.m. at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings, followed by a sharing time at 4:30 p.m. A Celebration of Life Service will be Monday, Sept. 8, at 10:30 a.m. at GracePoint Wesleyan Church in Brookings. Interment will immediately follow at First Lutheran Cemetery in Brookings.
Roger will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
