VOLGA Sioux Valley beat Parker/Marion in straight sets on Tuesday night at the Cossack Center.
The Cossacks won a close first set and then pulled away in the next two sets to earn the sweep.
Sioux Valley led 15-10 in the first set and then Parker/Marion scored six-straight points to take the lead. It was then 17-17 and the Cossacks went on an 8-3 run to close out the set and won 25-18.
Sioux Valley trailed 6-2 in the second set and scored four in-a-row to tie things up. It was then 11-11 and the Cossacks used a 5-0 run to go up 16-11. It was then 17-13 and Sioux Valley went on an 8-2 run to take the second set.
The Cossacks fell behind in the third set as well. They trailed 5-3 but then went on a 12-1 run to go up 15-6. Parker/Marion would cut the lead to 18-16 but then Sioux Valley outscored them 7-3 the rest of the way.
Sioux Valley head coach Jill Vincent said she thought her team did a good job in the front row and communicating in the final two sets.
I think in the second and third set we did a better job of being ready in the front row, Vincent said. We got off the net and were ready to hit. We also listened to our back row with whether they had a hole in the block or only one blocker, getting it past that one blocker. That helped out a lot.
Our passes were pretty consistent all night long. Our serve receive and defensive passes were good. Our setters were putting the ball up there, we just needed our hitters to be ready and make a good ball out of it [and they did that].
The Cossacks had 31 kills and 47 digs as a team. Lacey Langland had 10 kills to lead Sioux Valley and Maci Licht had eight kills. Emma Gorvin had three kills and 12 digs. Sienna Weiss had five kills and McKinley Schwab had 17 assists. Talya Vincent had 15 digs and Cameron Uecker had eight assists. Caitlin Russell had eight digs.
Vincent said she liked the way her team didnt let runs from Parker/Marion discourage them.
They have a lot of confidence in themselves, but once they make a mistake, theyre such a unit that they feel bad that they let their team down, Vincent said. They have to get over that and realize they havent [let the team down] because we have the next ball.
Its something we worked on last year, just any mistake, were flushing it and were moving on. I think we were down three or four to start each set and then they just have this confidence that its alright and we can come back. I just hope that there isnt a time where we run out of time.
Sioux Valley is now 2-1 on the season and hosts Beresford on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
