Bobcats fall in season opener

STURGIS The Brookings football team lost its season opener on Friday night as the Bobcats fell 25-21 to Sturgis Brown.

Sturgis jumped out to a 13-0 lead. The Scoopers first score of the game came on a pick six in the first quarter to put them up 7-0. Then a nine-yard touchdown run extended the lead in the second quarter.

The Bobcats got on the board later in the second quarter as Bergan Tetzlaff caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Gavin Andreson. Drew Johnson added the extra point to make it 13-7 at halftime.

Brookings would then take the lead in the third quarter as Tetzlaff ran it in from two yards out and a Johnson extra point made it 14-13. The Scoopers regained the lead with a one-yard run, but missed the extra point so it was 19-14.

Later in the third quarter Sturgis extended its lead to 25-14 with a two-yard touchdown run and a failed two-point conversion. Tetzlaff scored his third touchdown of the game as he caught a 12-yard pass from Anderson to cut the lead to 25-21. However, Brookings was unable to score again and was handed a loss in its first game of the season.

Brookings had 276 total yards and Sturgis had 258. Anderson was 8-of-26 for 166 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Tetzlaff had four catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Alex Wainman had two catches for 51 yards.

The Bobcats had 110 rushing yards. Ben Schulte had nine carries for 57 yards. Gus Armenta had four carries for 21 yards and Otto Eidsness had 11 carries for 18 yards.

Brookings will head to Mitchell this coming weekend as the Bobcats take on the Kernels in the Kernel Bowl on Saturday at 6 p.m.
