Forrest Giard’s hat trick leads Bobcats over Arrows

BROOKINGS Forrest Giards scored all three goals for the Brookings boys soccer team on Thursday night as the Bobcats came away with a 3-2 win over Watertown at Fishback Soccer Park.

Brookings held a 2-0 lead for most of the first half. Giard got the scoring going in the eighth minute as he found the back of the net on a free kick. He would double the lead 11 minutes later as he put one past the keeper after receiving a pass from Isaiah Vogt.

Watertown would cut the lead in half with just over two minutes left in the half as Isaac Thorson scored. The Arrows then had a corner kick with just under 12 minutes to go in the game and the ball pinballed around before Xane Figge was able to kick it in and that tied the game at 2-2.

Giard would then score the game-winning goal just two minutes later. He took a stretch pass from Kyler Soost and then kicked it past the left side of the keeper to make it 3-2. Brookings held off Watertown the rest of the way.

The Bobcats had eight shots and six of them were on goal, Brookings head coach Reece Weber said.

I felt that we were able to battle for longer. We were able to sustain pressure at times. We werent great with the soccer ball, but defensively, we were able to weather the storm when they were pushing us. Then in the end, our reaction to the second goal was big time, finding the third one to win the game, Weber said.

Giard had five shots on goal. Weber said he talked to the senior class about making Thursday night a night to remember.

I told all the seniors before the game that this is their last year and their last time playing against Watertown and if they want to make it memorable? Forrests performance, Im sure hell remember for a long time. All of the seniors stepped up big today, so Im happy for that class today, Weber said.

Zachary Mueller had two shots and Keller Peterson had one shot on goal. Sawyer Steen was in net for the Bobcats and had 10 saves.

Brookings lost its past two games 2-1 and gave up the game-winning goals late in each game. Weber said he liked the way his team responded after giving up the 2-0 lead.

In the last two games weve given up late goals and havent found the equalizer. Today, we gave up the equalizer, but were able to find the late goal to get the win. So, we flipped the script from the last couple games, which was big, Weber said.

The Bobcats are now 2-2-1 on the season. Theyll head to Mitchell on Saturday to take on the Kernels at 11 a.m. Weber said it was nice to see his team come away with a win in a game that was there for the taking and he hopes that will give them some momentum on Saturday.

This shows that we can compete with anybody. Watertown has had some good results this year. It shows that we can grind out a result in a game that is up for grabs, which we havent been able to do the past two games, Weber said.
