Bobcat boys go low in Huron

HURON The Brookings boys golf team had its highest team score in over 20 years on Thursday afternoon as the Bobcats came in fifth in the Huron Invite at Broadland Creek Golf Course.

The Bobcats shot a 308 as a team to come in fifth. OGorman shot 299 to win the tournament. Brandon Valley and Mitchell tied for second (304) and Harrisburg came in fourth (303).

Brookings was led by senior Tyson Lunn and eighth grader Jack Baszler. The pair tied for eighth and shot 76. Senior Rhys Heiberger also medeled as he tied for 14th with a 77. Sophomore Andrew Heize came in 22 (79) and senior Jase Bauer tied for 36th (83). Senior Issak Earley rounded things out for the Bobcats, tying for 47th (86).

Brookings head coach Andy Lee said it was nice to see his team give strong performances up and down the roster.

We played really well today as a team and getting four scores in the 70s is a big accomplishment. I have been talking a lot about the seniors and they contributed today all around. [Lunn] and [Heiberger] were our scoring leaders last year and they have picked up where they left off this season. It was nice to see those two seniors get a medal. Praise needs to be given to our younger guys as well. We had Andrew Heinze shoot a 79 and Jack Baszler shoot a 76 and earn a medal, Lee said.

Lee said this is a big step for the program as they were right there with the rest of the top five.

We were only 9 strokes from first place with some talented ESD teams in between, Lee said. Finishing ahead of Watertown is huge for us as well. I don’t remember the last time we beat them. They were state champions last year and they have been a dominant group for quite some time. It’s fun to be the team that is right in the mix and can make things happen. I’m proud of our guys for the work they have put in.

We have been competing the past few years with some good results but this year has a different feel to it. Some of these guys have been with us since 6th/7th grade and they earned this result today.

The Bobcats will play in the Hub City Invitational at Lee Park Golf Course in Aberdeen on Tuesday.
