JONES COUNTY A Murdo firefighter who died enroute to a large grass fire in a single-vehicle crash on Saturday evening, has been identified by authorities.
Preliminary crash information indicates Capt. Nicholas Patrick Van Dam, 37, was driving a 1989 Ford Fire Tender 4 miles north of Draper northbound on 279th Street while responding to a fire north of Draper. The vehicle left the roadway, rolled and ejected Van Dam, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
He was not wearing a seat belt, per information from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
All information released so far is preliminary in nature.
