RAPID CITY The Brookings Chutes had a tough end to their first game in the Junior Legion State Tournament on Thursday night as Rapid City Post 22 walked them off in extra innings.
Daxton Karn hit a lead-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning for the Expos and then Bridger Karn ended the game with a one-out double.
Brookings took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Ben Schulte and Mason Diers each walked with one out. Dixon Dauer then hit into a fielders choice but Schulte was able to score to give the Chutes the lead.
The Chutes added another run in the top of the third. Parker Witte reached on an error to start the inning. He made his way to second on that error and then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Jude Meendering. Witte then scored on a double from Nolan Krogman to make it 2-0.
Rapid City cut that lead in half in the bottom of the inning. Hunter Larson walked to start the half inning and then stole second and made his way to third on a wild pitch. He would then be thrown out trying to score. Reece Palmer was walked and then later scored on a Jaxon Reeder bunt to make it 2-1 through three innings.
That score stood until the bottom of the fifth. Palmer had a lead-off walk and stole second. He advanced to third on a Daxton Karn ground out and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Reeder to tie the game.
Brookings had two runners on in the top of the sixth with two outs but couldnt bring a run home. Each team went down one-two-three the next two half innings and the Expos had a chance in the bottom of the seventh to win the game.
Palmer walked with two outs and then stole second. He would then steal third and the ball went into left field. Palmer dashed towards home plate to attempt to score the winning run but Dauer fired it to home plate and Schulte tagged the runner out to force the game into extra innings where Rapid City would eventually come out on top.
Brookings had just one hit in the loss and it was Krogmans double.
Krogman got the start on the mound for the Chutes and pitched seven and a third innings. He gave up three earned runs on two hits with seven strikeouts and five walks. Baker Hanson came in for relief for Krogman and gave up one hit.
Brookings will play Rapid City 320 on Friday at 3:30 p.m. before taking on Brandon Valley on Saturday at 2 p.m. Those two results will determine if the Chutes can advance to Sunday.
