BROOKINGS The Brookings School District will be holding summertime rummage sales at three schools this week. During a July 24 special meeting, the school board voted unanimously to list as surplus a wide range of older school-owned furniture and equipment.
Weve got surplus items from Camelot, Medary and the Mickelson Middle School, Stacey VanBeek, district director of business services, said. We did have three school district taxpayers look over the list and declare that none of the items is worth over $2,500. So the plan is to have a rummage sale at each of those three schools next Wednesday, July 30, from 4 to 6 p.m. There will be a representative from the district present at each of those.
The surplus items mostly consist of student and teacher desks, chairs, tables, stools, filing cabinets and other office equipment. A wide range of miscellaneous items will also be up for sale. VanBeek said more information including a complete list of surplus items will be posted to the schools website and social media pages.
Board member Wes Tschetter asked what happens to items that do not get sold.
Then it is garbage and will go to a roll-out dumpster on Monday the following Monday, VanBeek said.
In other business Thursday night, the board unanimously approved appointing high school science teacher Phil Thramer as interim assistant principal at BHS for the 2025-26 school year. Former assistant principal Zach Thomas is serving as interim principal at BHS following the boards June 27 vote to terminate the contract of former principal Justin Stanley.
The school board also voted unanimously to approve a new master agreement between the district and South Dakota State University. The agreement allows high schoolers to continue to participate in non-medical internships and other learning experiences on campus. The agreement runs for one year and is scheduled to be automatically renewed the following three years, if neither party objects.
The next school board meeting is scheduled for Aug. 11 at 5:15 p.m. at Dakota Prairie Elementary School.
