The Brookings Bullets went 1-3 in the 16U State Tournament over the weekend.
The Bullets lost to Mitchell 13-1 on Thursday in Yankton and then lost to Rapid City Post 22 12-0 in Yankton on Friday. They then beat Aberdeen 4-0 in Crofton, Neb., before falling to Sioux Falls Post 15 later in the day. Brookings finished the season with a record of 10-29.
Thursday
Mitchell 13, Brookings 1 (5 inn.)
Mitchell scored 12 runs in the top of the third and that led to the win via the 10-run rule for them.
Brookings led 1-0 at the end of the first inning as Mack Nelson walked with the bases loaded. Mitchell then scored a run on a single in the top of the second to tie the game.
Mitchells first two runs of the top of the third came from two singles. Then a run from an error and a two-run single made it 6-1. Two bases-loaded walks and an RBI single made it 9-1. Then a run on a passed ball pushed the lead to 10-1. Two more RBI singles and a run from a ground out made it 13-1 and that would be the final.
Brookings had three hits in the loss. Aiden Adelman was 1-for-1, Rylan Hesser was 1-for-2 and Grant Horn was 1-for-3.
Jace Jaacks pitched the first two and a third innings and gave up 10 runs, eight earned, on five hits with two strikeouts and six walks. Lincoln Helmbolt pitched two and two thirds innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits with one strikeout and three walks.
Friday
Rapid City Post 22 12, Brookings 0 (5 inn.)
Brookings lost due to the 10-run rule again in the second game of the tournament on Friday.
Rapid City scored eight runs in the bottom of the third to break a 0-0 tie. The first four runs came from two singles. Then a sacrifice fly and an RBI single made it 6-0. A two-run single would push the lead to 8-0.
Four more runs were scored by Rapid City in the bottom of the fourth. The first was from a single and then a run from a ground out made it 10-0. A two-run single extended the lead to 12-0. Brookings was unable to score and did not cut the lead under 10.
Brookings had five hits. Hesser was 2-for-2 and Horn was 1-for-3. Wesden Van Ede and Camden Reicks were each 1-for-2.
Nelson pitched two innings and gave up six earned runs on four hits with one walk and no strikeouts. Hesser pitched an inning and two thirds and gave up six earned runs on eight hits with two walks and no strikeouts. Eli Ellsworth pitched a third of an inning and gave up no runs or hits.
Saturday
Brookings 4, Aberdeen 0
Van Ede pitched a complete game and gave up five hits and had six strikeouts and one walk to earn the shutout victory.
The Bullets led 1-0 after the first inning as Reicks hit Horn home with a single. Then Jaacks scored on a Nelson single to make it 2-0.
Jonas Murray hit Ellsworth home with a double in the top of the sixth and then in the top of the seventh Jaacks scored on a Nelson single to make it 4-0.
The Bullets had eight hits. Nelson was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Murray was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Reicks was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Jaacks was 2-for-3.
Sioux Falls Post 15 7, Brookings 4
The Bullets did not have enough offense in the final game of the tournament.
Brookings led 2-0 at the end of the first. Van Ede hit Jaacks home with a single and then scored on a Hesser ground out to grow the lead to two.
Sioux Falls scored three runs in the top of the second to take the lead. A run came home on an error and then two runs from a single made it 3-2. Then an RBI triple and a run from a ground out in the top of the third made it 5-2.
Brookings scored a run in the bottom of the fourth as Van Ede scored on a Hesser ground out to make it 5-3. An RBI double and RBI triple in the top of the fifth made it 7-3. Ellsworth scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the fifth to make the final 7-4.
The Bullets had seven hits. Van Ede was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Adelman, Nelson and Bode TeKrony were each 1-for-2. Ellsworth, Reicks and Jaacks were each 1-for-3. Hesser had two RBIs without a hit.
Adelman pitched three innings and gave up five runs, two earned, on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks. TeKrony pitched three and a third innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Ellsworth pitched two thirds of an inning and gave up no runs and no hits with a walk and no strikeouts.
