SIOUX FALLS The Brookings Bombers White team came in second place at the 13/14U State Tournament in Sioux Falls over the weekend.
The Bombers won four games leading up to the championship game before falling to Spearfish in the title game. Brookings beat Sioux Falls Post 15 13-2 on Friday and then topped Harrisburg Gold 13U 22-0 later in the day. On Saturday the Bombers beat Sioux Falls Post 15 again, this time 11-1. Then in the semifinals Brookings beat Aberdeen 10-5 on Sunday before losing the championship game 20-6.
Brookings finished the season with a record of 24-8.
Friday
Brookings 13, Sioux Falls 2 (4 inn.)
Brookings scored 10 runs in the first inning and that led to the 10-run rule victory in the Bombers first game of the tournament.
Hayden Smidt scored the first run of the game for the Bombers in the bottom of the first inning as he came home on a wild pitch. Delton Brownell and Lucas Kahler each scored on an error and Lincoln Damm was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 4-0. Griffin Streich hit Hudson Vincent and Beau Thompson home with a double and he and Damm scored on a single from Smidt to make it 8-0. Smidt scored on a Brownell single and Brownell scored on a balk by the pitcher to make it 10-0 after one inning.
Brookings scored one run in the second inning as Vincent scored on a Damm ground out to make it 11-0.
Sioux Falls scored both of its runs in the top of the third. The first run came on a wild pitch and then a steal of home made it 11-2.
Brookings lead went back to double digits in the bottom of the third. Smidt scored on a sacrifice fly from Brownell and then Kahler scored on an error to make it 13-2. Neither team scored in the fourth and that led to Brookings winning via the 10-run rule.
Brookings had four hits in the victory. Smidt and Brownell were each 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Streich was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Kuddyer Baugher was 1-for-3.
Derek Jordan pitched all four innings and gave up two earned runs on one hit with six strikeouts and four walks.
Brookings 22, Harrisburg Gold 0 (3 inn.)
Neither team scored in the first inning but then 18 runs in the second inning from the Bombers led to the big victory in game two of the tournament.
Baugher scored on a Vincent single and Vincent scored on a Thompson single to make it 2-0. Thompson scored on an error and Landon Mosley scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0. Striech scored on an error and Smidt came home on a Brownell single to push the lead 6-0. Kahler scored on a wild pitch and Brownell stole home to make it 8-0. Baugher came home on a wild pitch and Vincent scored on a Thompson triple to extend the lead to 10-0.
Thompson scored on a single from Mosley and Mosley came home on a single from Streich to make it 12-0. Streich scored on an error and Brownell scored on an error to push the lead to 14-0. Jordan hit Smidt home with a single and Jordan scored on a double from Baugher. Kahler scored on a Vincent ground out and Baugher scored on an error to make it 18-0 heading into the third.
Streich scored on a Brownell double in the top of the third to make it 19-0. Brownell scored on a ground out from Jordan and Kahler scored on a passed ball to make it 21-0. The final run of the game for the Bombers came from a wild pitch when Baugher scored.
The Bombers had 17 hits in the victory. Thompson was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Brownell was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Vincent was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Jordan was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Streich was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Baugher was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Moisley was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Smidt was 2-for-3.
Jaxson Neuharth pitched all three innings and gave up two hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Saturday
Brookings 11, Sioux Falls 1 (5 inn.)
The Bombers beat Sioux Falls via the 10-run rule once again on Saturday.
Brookings scored three runs in the bottom of the first. Neuharth and Brownell scored on a single from Baugher and then Baugher scored on an error to make it 3-0.
Sioux Falls scored a run on a wild pitch to make it 3-1 in the top of the second. In the bottom of the inning Streich scored on a single from Brownell to make it a three-run game again.
Vincent scored on a Smidt single and Brownell hit Streich home with a single to make it 6-1 through four innings. Neuharth scored on an error in the bottom of the fifth and Damm and Thompson scored on a Streich single to make it 9-1. Brownell then hit Smidt and Striech home with a single to end the game.
Brookings had 12 hits. Brownell was 4-for-4 with four RBIs and Streich was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Baugher was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Smidt was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Vincent and Kahler were each 1-for-2 and Baugher was 1-for-3.
Kahler pitched all five innings and gave up one earned run on five hits with four strikeouts and four walks.
Sunday
Brookings 10, Aberdeen 5
The Bombers scored nine runs in the bottom of the fifth and held off Aberdeen in the top of the sixth to punch their ticket to the championship game.
Brookings led 1-0 after the first two innings. Thompson scored on a single from Streich in the bottom of the second to make it 1-0. Aberdeen then tied the game with a run from an error in the top of the fourth and took the lead with runs from an error and a single to make it 3-1.
Mosley scored on an error and Streich came home on a Smidt single to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth. Smidt scored on a Brownell single and Jordan came home on a Kahler single to make it 5-3. Kahler scored on a double from Vincent and Vincent scored on a single from Thompson to push the lead to 7-3. Thompson scored on a wild pitch and Mosley scored on a double from Streich to make it 9-3 and then Smidt hit Streich home with a single to extend the lead to 10-3.
Aberdeen scored runs on an error and a single to make it 10-5 in the top of the sixth but the Smittys were unable to score any more runs and that was the final.
Brookings had 12 hits. Smidt was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Streich was 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Vincent was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Thompson and Kahler were each 1-for-2 with an RBI. Brownell was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Mosley was 1-for-1. Jordan was 1-for-3.
Baugher pitched all five innings. He gave up five unearned runs on seven hits with one strikeout and one walk.
Spearfish 20, Brookings 6 (5 inn.)
Spearfish led 14-0 through three and a half innings and cruised to a 10-run rule win in the championship.
Spearfish scored six runs in the first two innings. The first run of the game came in the first inning and it was on a sacrifice fly. Then runs from an error and a single pushed the lead to 3-0. A bases-clearing double extended the lead to 6-0.
A run from a ground out in the top of the third made it 7-0. Then a two-run triple and a two-run double extended the lead to 11-0. Two runs from wild pitches and an RBI single made it 14-0.
Brookings scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Vincent hit Jordan home with a single and then Mosley scored on an error to make it 14-2. Streich came to the plate with the bases loaded and cleared the bases with a double to cut the lead to 14-5.
Spearfish scored five runs in the top of the fifth. Two RBI singles and an RBI double made it 17-5. Then a bases-clearing triple extended the lead to 20-5. Jordan scored on a double from Baugher to make it 20-6 and that would end up being the final as Brookings was unable to cut the lead under 10.
The Bombers had five hits in the loss. Streich was 1-for-2 with three RBIs and Baugher was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Vincent was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Kahler was 1-for-2.
Streich got the start on the mound for the Bombers. He gave up 13 runs, 12 earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Neuharth pitched an inning and gave up five runs, four earned, on four hits with one strikeout and one walk. Kahler pitched two thirds of an inning and gave up two earned runs on two hits with a walk and no strikeouts. Smidt got the final out for Brookings.
