BROOKINGS The Brookings Bombers Red team went 2-2 in the 13U State Tournament over the weekend in Brookings.
The Bombers lost to Brandon Valley 7-3 on Friday morning and then beat Spearfish 17-2 later in the day. Brookings beat Yankton 16-13 on Saturday night before falling 2-0 to Tea in the final game of the tournament on Sunday.
Brookings finished the season with a record of 14-21.
Friday
Brandon Valley 7, Brookings 3
Brandon Valley led 7-1 after the first three innings and that was enough of a cushion to beat the Bombers in the first game of the tournament.
Brandon scored a run on a single in the first inning to make it 1-0. Then an inside the park grand slam in the top of the second made it 4-0. The Bombers scored a run in the bottom of the inning as Bennett Porter hit Weston Diers home with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.
A run from a double and a run from a wild pitch in the top of the third made it 7-1. Elias Wagner scored on a John Romsa ground out and then Owen Rounds came home on a Mason Hegerfeld single to make it 7-3. However, Brookings was unable to score any more runs.
Brookings had three hits. Hegerfeld was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Diers was 1-for-2 .Wagner was 1-for-3 and Porter and Romsa each had an RBI without a hit.
Romsa pitched five innings and gave up seven runs, six earned, on three hits with five strikeouts and six walks. Cade Jaacks pitched an inning and gave up no earned runs and no hits with one walk and no strikeouts.
Brookings 17, Spearfish 2 (3 inn.)
The Bombers bounced back with a big win in the second game of the tournament. They led 7-1 at the end of the first inning.
Wagner and Rounds each scored on a wild pitch and then Jay KC hit Hegerfeld home with a single to make it 3-0. Collen Torgrude, Wagner and Rounds were all walked with the bases loaded and then Romsa was hit by a pitch to make it 7-0. Spearfish scored a run on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-1.
Brookings scored two runs in the top of the second. Torgrude was walked with the bases loaded and then KC scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-1. An RBI single from Spearfish in the bottom of the inning made it 9-2.
Diers hit Rounds home with a single and then Romsa scored on an error to make it 11-2. KC hit Diers home with a single and Hegerfeld scored on a wild pitch. Porter scored on a wild pitch and KC And Wagner came home on a triple from Rounds to make it 16-2. The final run of the game for the Bombers came on a single from Romsa that scored Rounds.
Brookings had six hits. Romsa and KC were each 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Rounds was 1-for-1 with three RBIs. Diers was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Torgrude had two RBIs without a hit. Porter and Wagner each had an RBI without a hit.
Porter did not record an out and gave up one earned run and no hits with three walks. Torgrude pitched two innings and gave up one earned run on two hits with no strikeouts. KC pitched the final inning and gave up no runs and one hit with two walks and no strikeouts.
Saturday
Brookings 16, Yankton 13
The Bombers trailed 12-9 heading into the final inning and then outscored Yankton 7-1 in the sixth inning to earn the victory.
Brookings led 1-0 at the end of the first inning after Wagner scored on an error. Yankton scored a run on a passed ball in the bottom of the second to make it 1-1.
Brookings scored seven runs in the top of the third. Romsa came to the plate with the bases loaded and then cleared the bases with a double. He scored on a double from Diers and then Hegerfeld hit Diers home with a double of his own to make it 6-1. Another RBI double from Porter made it 7-1 and Porter scored on a passed ball to push the lead to 8-1.
Yankton scored five runs in the bottom of the third. Runs from a double and two singles made it 8-4. Then a run from a ground out and a run from an error made it 8-6.
Romsa scored on an error in the top of the fourth to make it 9-6. Yankton then took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. The first run came from an error and then a two-run single tied the game. Another run from an error and a run from a ground out made it 11-9.
Yankton extended the lead to 12-9 in the bottom of the fifth on a run from a single.
Rounds scored on a Hegerfeld single and Diers scored on an error to make it 12-11. Tegan Jensen was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and KC scored on a passed ball to give Brookings the lead. Rounds was walked with the bases loaded and Jensen and Wagner each scored on a Romsa single to make it 16-12.
Yankton scored a run on a passed ball in the bottom of the sixth but that was it and the Bombers won the high-scoring affair.
Brookings had eight hits in the win. Romsa was 3-for-5 with five RBIs and Hegerfeld was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Porter was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Rounds and Diers were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Jensen had an RBI without a hit.
Sunday
Tea 2, Brookings 0
The two teams combined for five hits but the Titans were able to score one run in each of the fourth and fifth inning to get the win.
Teas run in the bottom of the fourth came on a steal of home and then a run from a double made it 2-0.
Brookings had just one hit as Hegerfeld was 1-for-3. Jax Sonnenburg pitched a complete game and gave up two earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
