SIOUX FALLS The Brookings Bombers Gray team went 0-3 in the 13/14U State Tournament in Sioux Falls this weekend.
The Bombers lost 12-2 to Harrisburg Maroon on Friday and then fell to Aberdeen 12-3 later in the day. On Saturday Brookings lost to Sioux Falls Post 13U 11-1.
Brookings finished the season with a final record of 6-22.
Friday
Harrisburg 12, Brookings 2 (4 inn.)
Harrisburg Maroon won via the 10-run rule and they led 5-0 at the end of the first inning.
The Tigers first two runs came from two singles. Then a two-run double and a sacrifice fly pushed the lead to five.
Brookings scored one run in both the second and third inning. The run in the second came on a single from Teagan Wallace. Then in the third Kale Weiker came home on a sacrifice fly from Rocco Murano to make it 5-2.
Two RBI singles and an RBI double in the bottom of the third made it 8-2. Then an RBI double, a run from a passed ball and a two-run double pushed the lead to 12-2 and that was the final.
Brookings had eight hits. Wallace was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Murano was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Jess Johnson was 3-for-3 and Weiker was 2-for-2. Liam Johnson was 1-for-2.
Logan Schaar pitched a complete game and gave up 12 runs, 11 earned, on 13 hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
Aberdeen 12, Brookings 3
Aberdeen led 4-3 after three innings and then outscored Brookings 8-0 the rest of the way.
Each team scored a run in the first. The Smittys scored a run on an error in the top of the inning and then Weiker hit Brayden Brintnall home with a single to make it 1-1.
An RBI single and a two-run single from the Smittys made it 4-1 in the top of the third. Shinji Numata then hit Schaar and Weiker home with a single to make it 4-3.
An RBI single from the Smittys in the top of the fourth made it 5-3. Then two runs from a double and a run from an error made it 8-3. Another RBI double pushed the lead to 9-3 in the top of the fifth. Then in the top of the sixth Aberdeen scored runs on a ground out and two wild pitches made the final 12-3.
Brookings had nine hits in the loss. Weiker was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Numata was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Brintnall and Murano were each 1-for-2. Wallace, Schaar, Jess Johnson and Colin Andrews were each 1-for-3.
Jess Johnson pitched four innings and gave up nine runs, six earned, on 11 hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Numata pitched two innings and gave up three unearned runs on one hit with three strikeouts and two walks.
Saturday
Sioux Falls 11, Brookings 1 (5 inn.)
The Bombers offense struggled in the final game of the tournament as they only had three hits and that led to the 10-run loss in their tournament finale.
Sioux Falls led 2-1 after two innings. Liam Johnson scored on an error in the top of the second. Then two runs from an error in the bottom of the inning gave Sioux Falls the lead.
Sioux Falls extended the lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the third. The runs came from a double and two singles. Another RBI double in the bottom of the fourth made it 7-1. A bases-loaded walk, a two-run double and an RBI single in the fifth ended the game due to the 10-run rule.
Murano, Schaar and Liam Johnson were each 1-for-2. Numata pitched two innings and gave up five runs, three earned, on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Jess Johnson pitched two innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Schaar did not record an out and gave up four earned runs on two hits with four walks and no strikeouts.
