ABERDEEN The Brookings Bombers Black 14U teams run in the state tournament ended in the semifinals on Monday afternoon.
The Bombers beat Harrisburg MAG 13-3 in their first game of the day, but then lost to Brandon Valley 9-0 in the afternoon. Brookings finished the season with a record of 19-23-2.
Brookings 13, Harrisburg 3 (5 innings)
The Bombers led 6-3 through three innings and used a seven-run fourth inning to win the game via the 10-run rule.
Brookings led 3-0 at the end of the first inning. Ty Johnson and Mason Burzlaff led off the game with back-to-back singles. Ty Delbridge hit into a fielders choice for the second out of the inning as Burzlaff was thrown out at second. Johnson scored on a wild pitch and then Hayden Jones sent Delbridge home with a double to make it 2-0. Jones then scored on an error to push the lead to 3-0.
The Bombers lead grew to 5-0 in the top of the second. Carter Nielsen and Johnson drew back-to-back walks with one out. Nielsen scored on a double from Burzlaff and Johnson scored on a wild pitch to make it a five-run game.
Harrisburg got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the second. The first run came from a double and then a wild pitch sent a runner home to make it 5-2 through two innings.
Brookings got one run back in the top of the third. Dario McSweeney hit a lead-off single and then stole second. He then scored on a two-out double from Nielsen to make it 6-2.
Harrisburg scored a run from a single in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 6-3.
Cooper Drawdy was walked with one out in the top of the fourth and then Delbridge reached on an error. McSweeney was hit by a pitch to load the bases up with no outs and then Jennings Huntimer cleared the bases with a double to make it 9-3. Grayson Wagner and Nielsen each walked to load the bases again and then Huntimer scored on a wild pitch. Wagner scored on a Burzlaff single and Nielsen scored on a wild pitch to make it 12-3. The final run of the game for the Bombers was from a balk by the pitcher as Johnson scored to make it 13-3.
Harrisburg was unable to score in both the bottom of the fourth and the bottom of the fifth and the game ended.
The Bombers had nine hits in the win. Huntimer was 1-for-3 with three RBIs and Burzlaff was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Nielsen was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Jones was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Johnson was 1-for-2.
Burzlaff pitched a complete game for Brookings. He gave up three earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Brandon Valley 9, Brookings 0
The Lynx scored eight runs in the first inning and kept Brookings off the scoreboard the entire game.
Brandon Valleys first six batters all got on base. One run came home on a double and then a two-run single made it 3-0. Three more RBI doubles stretched the lead to 6-0. Then an RBI single and a sacrifice fly made it 8-0 heading into the second inning.
The Lynx would not score again until the fifth inning. They hit a two-out triple and then that runner scored on a single to make it 9-0.
Neither team scored the rest of the way.
The Bombers had seven hits in the loss. Burzlaff was 3-for-4 and Mason Burghardt was 1-for-1. Drawdy and Delbridge were each 1-for-3 and Johnson was 1-for-4.
Jones got the start and did not record an out. He gave up six earned runs on five hits with one walk and no strikeouts. Delbridge pitched the next two innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits with one strikeout and one walk. Brady Nutter pitched four innings and gave up one earned run on four hits with one walk and no strikeouts.
