Brookings once again targeting mosquito menace with fogging

BROOKINGS In the Mosquito War, its a never-ending series of battles between city fogging crews and the bloodthirsty insects and another round of control efforts is planned for late Thursday night.

Fogging operations are expected to take place from 8:30 p.m. to midnight, weather permitting. It will be at least the fourth time the citys street department has done so, with previous rounds taking place July 17, July 14, July 8 and leading up to the Brookings Summer Arts Festival.

Community members can help our mosquito mitigation efforts by removing sources of standing water in their yards, Street Supervisor Josh McClain said in a Thursday news release from the city.

Between that and the citys fogging, it does help, with the citys traps showing significantly fewer mosquitoes in them immediately following a treatment.

The voracious little buggers like to multiply, though, and so here we are, mere hours before yet another battle in the endless Mosquito War.

Well, until the arrival of winter and its bitterly cold temperatures and howling blizzards.
