BRUCE Visitors are invited to bivouac in Bruce during Honey Days on July 2527.
Our theme is camping so Honey Days is intense every year, but this year its inTents, Pennie Lutz with the Bruce Community Club said. If youve ever been to Honey Days, theres campers everywhere in town so it just fits.
Events begin Friday with a 3-on-3 basketball tourney at 10 a.m. followed by a cookout at noon.
People can come and get free food, Lutz said. We have lots of sponsors for that to make it free. The 3-on-3 basketball tourney is going to start a little bit early this year because weve got so many teams. Last year, some people couldnt get to the bean bag tournament on time.
Registration for the bean bag tournament starts 6 p.m. and bags fly at 7 p.m.
Last year we had 123 teams, Lutz said. Its $10 to enter, and then we pay out half. So its a pretty low cost for a fun time.
Saturdays schedule starts with a 5K run, walk or pedal at 7:30 a.m. Then at 8:30 a.m., a cavalcade of camping-themed floats line up at Grace Free Lutheran Church for the 10 a.m. parade. Lutz said thats her favorite part.
We come around the corner on the float, we go down Jay Street and its packed with people, she said. Then you see them all go to the burger feed afterwards that big crowd and its pretty amazing.
The burger feeds is $8 per person and runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
We have the Hickory Wind Band playing, Lutz said. My husband will grill about 900 burgers along with his friends, so he will have some help. Then theres also ice cream with honey fudge served.
Theres also a car show Saturday at 11 a.m. and a volleyball tournament at noon.
We already have 52 volleyball teams, Lutz said. Were going to cap it at 60 this year. Otherwise, we just cant fit all the nets in.
Kids can enjoy water inflatables from 1 to 5 p.m. for $5. The annual pork barbecue is at 5 p.m and costs $8 per person.
At the pork barbecue, Adee Honey Farms will provide complimentary ice cream sundaes with honey fudge, Lutz said. Were also going to have Greg DeRynck playing at that barbecue. Hes a local guy thats pretty amazing.
Saturday concludes with a street dance at 9 p.m. Admission is $15.
We have the band Undercover, Lutz said. They keep everybody dancing, and it just keeps building and building throughout the night. A few years ago we started donating the proceeds to the fire department. They help us with the gate, and its a group effort to support them.
On Sunday, theres a Legion pancake breakfast at 8 a.m., kids camping games and a craft fair at 2 p.m., and the annual town and country softball match pitting those who live in town against the local rural residents at 6:30 p.m.
A full schedule is at the Bruce Honey Days page on Facebook. Many events are free but some have costs or registration
Just come and have a safe, good time, Lutz said. Every year I meet some person who says, this is my first time to Honey Days. We never imagined how fun it would be, and we will be back. Its always great to hear that, because we do have a little bit of everything.
