BROOKINGS The Brookings Bullets 16U team went 1-3 in two doubleheaders over the weekend.
The Bullets split a doubleheader with Aberdeen on Friday, losing game one 6-2 and winning game two 9-6. They then were swept by Brandon Valley on Sunday, losing 14-0 and 11-0.
Brookings is now 9-26. The Bullets will head to Yankton to play in the state tournament this upcoming weekend.
Friday
Game 1: Aberdeen 6, Brookings 2
The Smittys scored three runs in the first inning and that was enough of a cushion to get the win in game one.
The first run of the game for Aberdeen came on an error. Then a run from a balk and a bases-loaded walk made it 3-0. Aberdeen extended the lead to 4-0 with an RBI double in the top of the fourth.
Brookings cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth. Camden Reicks scored on an error and then Mack Nelson hit Jace Jaacks home with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-2.
Aberdeen doubled its lead in the top of the fifth. The first run of the inning came from a double and then an RBI single made it 6-2.
Brookings had six hits in the loss. Nelson was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Rylan Hesser was 2-for-3. Jonas Murray was 1-for-2 and Reicks and Grant Horn were each 1-for-3.
Aiden Adelman got the start on the mound and did not record an out. He gave up three runs, two earned, on no hits with two walks and no strikeouts. Hesser pitched the next seven innings and gave up three runs, one earned, on three hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.
Game 2: Brookings 9, Aberdeen 6
The Bullets scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth and held off Aberdeen in the top of the sixth.
Each team scored two runs in the first inning. Aberdeens runs came from a triple and a single. Horn then hit Jaacks home with a triple in the bottom of the inning and he scored on a single from Hesser to make it 2-2.
Aberdeen scored a run on a single in the top of the second to make it 3-2. Nelson hit Reicks home with a single to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Jaacks came home on a single from Horn and then Nelson stole home to make it 5-3. Horn scored on a ground out from Eli Ellsworth and Hesser scored on an error to make it 7-3. Murray scored on a passed ball and Nelson was walked with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 9-3.
Aberdeen scored three runs in the top of the sixth. The first came from a triple and then a run from an error and another RBI triple made it 9-6. The next batter grounded out to end the game.
Brookings had six hits in the win.Horn was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Nelson was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Ellsworth was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Jaacks was 1-for-2.
Jaacks pitched five and two thirds innings and gave up six runs, four earned, on six hits with seven strikeouts and four walks. Ellsworth recorded the final out.
Sunday
Game 1: Brandon Valley 14, Brookings 0 (5 inn.)
The Lynx scored six runs in the top of the fifth and kept Brookings off the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning to win the game via the 10-run rule.
Brandon Valley led 5-0 after the first two innings. The Lynx hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the first and then a run on a double play in the second made it 2-0. Then runs from a wild pitch, a single and an error made it 5-0.
The Lynx scored runs on a ground out and a single in the top of the third to make it 7-0. Then an RBI double in the fourth pushed the lead to 8-0.
A two-run single and a sacrifice fly made it 11-0. Then a bases-loaded walk and a two-run single made the final 14-0.
Brookings had one hit in the loss as Horn was 1-for-2. Adelman pitched four innings and gave up 11 runs, seven earned, on five hits with nine walks and zero strikeouts. Bode TeKrony pitched an inning and gave up three earned runs on two hits with three walks and no strikeouts.
Game 2: Brandon Valley 11, Brookings 0 (5 inn.)
The second game was five innings as Brandon Valley won via the 10-run rule again.
Brandon Valley led 7-0 after the first two innings. Runs from an error, an RBI single and a two-run single made it 4-0 after the first. Then a run from a ground out, an RBI single and a bases-loaded walk pushed the lead to seven.
Brandon Valley would hit another RBI single in the top of the fourth and then a run from a ground out later in the inning made it 9-0. Then a two-run triple in the top of the fifth extended the lead to 11-0 and Brookings was unable to score any runs in the bottom of the inning.
Brookings had three hits. Murray and Hesser were each 1-for-2 and Horn was 1-for-3.
Ellsworth pitched one inning and gave up four runs, one earned, on three hits with one walk and no strikeouts. Lincoln Helmbolt pitched three innings and gave up five runs, two earned, on two hits with five walks and two strikeouts. Reicks pitched the final inning and gave up two runs, one earned, on one hit with one walk and no strikeouts.
