BROOKINGS The Brookings Junior Legion Chutes went 3-1 in two doubleheaders over the weekend at Bob Shelden Field.
The Chutes split a doubleheader with Aberdeen on Friday afternoon and then swept Watertown on Saturday. Brookings is now 19-11 and qualified for the state tournament. The tournament will be played in Rapid City starting on Aug. 30 and the Chutes will be the No. 3 seed.
Friday
Game 1: Aberdeen 8, Brookings 2
Aberdeen led 4-0 after two innings and didnt look back in game one.
The Smittys scored a run on a double in the top of the first. They then hit three RBI singles in the top of the second to make it 4-0.
Aberdeen would extend the lead to 8-0 in the top of the fourth. The first run of the inning came on a bases-loaded walk and then a two-run single and another bases-loaded walk pushed the lead to eight.
Brookings avoided a shutout with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Krogman hit Jude Meendering home with a double and then a bases-loaded walk from Noah Lease made it 8-2.
The Chutes had just three hits in the loss. Krogman was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Lease and Meendering were each 1-for-2.
Mason Diers got the start on the mound for the Chutes and pitched two innings. He gave up four earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and one walk. Andrew Heinze pitched the next three innings and gave up four earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts and seven walks. Connor Jones pitched the final two innings and gave up no runs and one hit with one strikeout and no walks.
Game 2: Brookings 5, Aberdeen 1
Brookings scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth and that was the final margin of victory for the Bandits.
The Bandits broke a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the third when Ben Schulte scored on an error. Diers then hit Baker Hanson home with a triple in the fourth. Diers scored on a balk by the pitcher and then Dixon Dauer scored on a ground out from Krogman to make it 4-0. Then Parker Witte scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0.
Aberdeens lone run of the game came on a single in the top of the seventh.
Brookings had two hits in the win. Diers was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Schulte was 1-for-2. Hanson pitched a complete game and gave up one earned run on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks.
Saturday
Game 1: Brookings 10, Watertown 7
The Chutes took a 9-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth and held off Watertown the rest of the way.
Brookings led 2-1 at the end of the first inning. Watertown scored a run on a triple in the top of the first. Diers was walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning and then Dauer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 2-1.
The Arrows tied the game in the top of the third when they scored a run on a single.
The Chutes then regained the lead in the bottom of the third. Schulte hit Hanson home with a triple and then Meendering was walked with the bases loaded to make it 4-2. Krogman walked as well to make it 5-2.
Brookings scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Lease hit Witte home with a single and then Diers, Dauer and Tate Sonnenburg were all walked with the bases loaded to make it 9-2.
Watertown scored four runs in the top of the sixth. The first run of the inning came from a bases-loaded walk and then runs from a single, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly made it 9-6.
Krogman scored on an error in the bottom of the sixth to make it 10-6. Watertown scored a run on a ground out in the top of the seventh but that was the only run the Arrows scored the rest of the way and the final was 10-7.
Brookings had four hits in the victory. Schulte was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Lease was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Hanson was 2-for-4.
Krogman pitched four innings and gave up two earned runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Lease pitched two innings and gave up four runs, two earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Dauer pitched two thirds of an inning and gave up one earned run on two hits with two walks. Sutton Scheider got the final out of the game.
Game 2: Brookings 13, Watertown 3 (5 innings.)
The Chutes led 9-3 after three innings and then scored four more runs to end the game via the 10-run rule.
Watertown led 2-0 at the end of the first. The Arrows first run was from a triple and then a run from a single made it 2-0. Another run from a single made it 3-0 in the top of the second.
Brookings took the lead in the bottom of the second. Hanson and Schulte each scored on an error by the pitcher. Heinze then hit Dauer home with a single and he scored on an error to make it 4-3.
The Chutes scored five runs in the bottom of the third. The first run came on a bases-loaded walk from Dauer and then Heinze hit Jones and Diers home with a single. Heinze scored on an error to make it 9-3.
An RBI double from Diers in the fourth made it 10-3. Then Hanson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Schulte and Meendering scored on an error to make it 13-3 and that ended the game.
Brookings had 13 hits in the win. Heinze was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Hanson was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Diers was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Meedering was 2-for-4. Leases was 1-for-3 and Dauer had an RBI without a hit.
Schneider pitched four innings and gave up three earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Meendering pitched one inning and gave up no runs and one hit with one strikeout and no walks.
