BROOKINGS The Brookings Bandits split a legion baseball doubleheader with Harrisburg on Friday night at Bob Shelden Field.
The Bandits lost game one 5-1 and then beat Harrisburg 4-3 in game two. Brookings is now 17-21 on the season and will play Harrisburg in a state tournament qualification best-of-three series against Harrisburg this week in Harrisburg. Game one is scheduled for Wednesday night and games two and three are scheduled for Thursday night.
Game 1: Harrisburg 5, Brookings 1
It was 1-1 after three innings and then the Tigers outscored the Bandits 4-0 the rest of the way.
Each team scored one run in the third inning. Harrisburg scored a run on an error in the top of the inning. Brookings lone run of the game came on a double play that Tre Christopherson hit into but Jay Harris scored on the play.
Harrisburg retook the lead in the top of the fourth on a run from a sacrifice fly. Then a solo home run from B Esser made it 3-1 in the top of the fifth. An RBI double and RBI single in the sixth made the final 5-1.
Brookings had five hits. Harris was 2-for-3 and Jon Kahler was 1-for-3. Cooper Schneider and Winston Plummer were each 1-for-4.
Tyson Antonen pitched five and two thirds innings for the Bandits. He gave up five runs, four earned, on seven hits with seven strikeouts and four walks. Ryan Lockrem pitched the final inning and a third and gave up no runs and two hits with no strikeouts and no walks.
Game 2: Brookings 4, Harrisburg 3
Brookings scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead and then held off Harrisburg to earn the win in game two.
Harrisburg scored a run in each of the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. The run in the second inning was on a double and then a run from a sacrifice fly made it 2-0.
Plummer hit Kahler home with a single in the bottom of the third to make it 2-1. Kahler then hit Antonene home with a single in the fourth to tie the game. The Bandits took the lead when Schneider was walked with the bases loaded. Plummer was walked with the bases loaded as well to make it 4-2.
Harrisburg scored a run on a single in the top of the seventh to make it 4-3 but they were unable to score anymore runs.
Brookings had five hits again. Plummer was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Schneider was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Kahler was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Harris was 1-for-2.
Kysin Reuer pitched the first four and a third innings and gave up two earned runs on two hits with four strikeouts and six walks. Nolan Wagner pitched the final two and a two thirds innings and gave up one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
