WATERTOWN The Brookings Bombers Gray 13/14U team was swept in a doubleheader against Watertown on Thursday night.
The Arrows won game one 9-6 and game two 15-5 in four innings. The Bombers are now 6-19 and will play in the State Tournament in Sioux Falls next weekend.
Game 1: Watertown 9, Brookings 6
Brookings and Watertown were tied 5-5 through two innings and then the Arrows outscored the Bombers 4-1 the rest of the way.
Brookings scored four runs in the top of the first. Shiji Numata hit Brayden Britnall home with a single and then Kale Weiker and Logan Schaar scored on a single from Liam Johnson to make it 3-0. Numata then stole home to make it 4-0.
The Bombers extended the lead to 5-0 in the top of the second when Britnall scored on an error. Watertown then tied the game in the bottom of the inning.
The Arrows scored a run on a ground out and then a run on a wild pitch made it 5-2. An RBI double and runs from an error and a wild pitch made it 5-5 heading into the third.
Watertown gained the lead in the fourth with a run on a sacrifice fly. Then a run from a bases-loaded walk and a two-run double pushed the lead to 9-5 heading into the sixth.
Brookings would score one run in the top of the sixth but that was not enough. Jess Johnson was walked with the bases loaded and Colin Andrews scored to make the final 9-6.
The Bombers had 11 hits in the loss. Liam Johnson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Numata was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Schaar was 2-for-3 and Britnall was 3-for-4. Noah Hamann, Rocco Murano and Weiker were each 1-for-2. Andrews was 1-for-3 and Jess Johnson had an RBI without a hit.
Numata pitched all five innings and gave up nine runs, six earned, on seven hits with six strikeouts and three walks.
Game 2: Watertown 15, Brookings 5 (4 inn.)
Watertown scored in every inning and that led to a 10-run rule win in game two.
The Arrows led 6-0 at the end of the first inning. The first two runs of the inning came from singles. Then a run from a wild pitch and an RBI single pushed the lead to 6-0. A two-run double made it a six-run game heading into the second.
Brookings cut the lead in half in the top of the second. Numata scored on a wild pitch and Liam Johnson came home on a wild pitch as well. Murano then scored on a Wallace ground out to make it 6-3.
Watertown scored a run on a ground out in the bottom of the second to make it 7-3. Then Brookings scored two runs in the top of the third as Weiker scored on an error and Numata scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-5.
The Arrows would score five runs in the bottom of the third. The Arrows hit a two-run single and an RBI double to make it 10-5. Then two more RBI singles made it 12-5.
Watertown would end the game in the fourth with three more runs. Two more RBI singles and a run from a wild pitch ended the game due to the 10-run rule.
The Bombers had three hits in the defeat. Numata was 1-for-1 and Britnall and Liam Johnson were each 1-for-2. Murano and Wallace each had an RBI without a hit.
Schaar pitched all four innings and gave up 15 earned runs on 15 hits with four strikeouts and six walks.
