Brookings Bombers Black swept in doubleheader against Brandon Valley

BROOKINGS The Brookings Bombers Black 14U team was swept in a doubleheader against Brandon Valley on Thursday night at Bob Shelden Field.

Both games were competitive as the Lynx won game one 4-2 and took game two 8-4. Brookings is now 15-18-2 and will play a doubleheader at Tea on Friday starting at 2 p.m.

Game 1: Brandon Valley 4, Brookings 2

Brandon Valley scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead and then kept Brookings off the scoreboard the rest of the way.

The Lynx broke a 0-0 tie in the top of the third. They led off the inning with a single and then that runner later scored on a two-out single to make it 1-0.

Brookings answered with two runs in the bottom of the third. Mason Burghardt led off the inning with a single. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Ty Johnson and then made his way to third on a single from Mason Burzlaff. Cooper Drawdy then hit Burghardt home with a single and then Burzlaff scored on a single from Hayden Jones to make it 2-1.

A batter reached on an error to start the sixth for the Lynx. That runner then scored on an error and then an RBI double gave Brandon Valley the lead. Another RBI double later in the inning made it 4-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Brookings went down one-two-three in the bottom of the sixth. Burghardt and Johnson each reached on an error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh but Burzlaff then popped out to end the game.

Brookings had six hits. Jones and Drawdy were each 2-for-3 with an RBI. Burghardt was 1-for-3 and Burzlaff was 1-for-4.

Drawdy pitched a complete game for the Bombers. He gave up four runs, one earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

Game 2: Brandon Valley 8, Brookings 4

Brandon Valley led 6-3 through five innings and held off the Bombers the rest of the way.

The Lynx led 3-0 at the end of the first inning. They led off the game with a single and followed with a walk. A run came home on a single and then runs from back-to-back ground outs made it a three-run game.

Brandon Valley made it 4-0 in the top of the second with an RBI single. Brookings then scored three runs in the bottom of the inning.

Delbridge led off the bottom of the inning with a single. He advanced to second on a single from Jennings Huntimer and then scored on an error to make it 4-1. Huntimer scored on an error as well and Dario McSweeney reached on the error. McSweeney then scored on a Burghardt single to make it 4-3.

Brandon Valley would double its lead in the top of the fourth. The Lynx hit a lead-off single and then that runner scored on a two-out single to make it 5-3. They scored another run on a single in the top of the fifth to make it 6-3.

The Lynx scored two more runs in the top of the seventh. They hit a one-out double and that runner came home on a two-out single to make it 7-3. Another run came home on an error to push the lead to 8-3.

Johnson hit a two-out double in the bottom of the seventh and then scored on a Burzlaff single to make it 8-4. Then Drawdy flew out to center field to end the game.

Brookings had seven hits. Burghardt was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Burzlaff was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Johnson was 2-for-4 and Huntimer was 2-for-3. Delbridge was 1-for-3.

Delbridge pitched five innings and gave up six runs, five earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Brady Nutter pitched the final two innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits with no strikeouts and no walks.
