Bombers Red splits doubleheader against Brandon Valley

BRANDON The Brookings Bombers Red 13U team split a doubleheader with Brandon Valley on Thursday night.

The Lynx won game one 17-10 and the Bombers took game two 7-5. Brookings is now 10-19 plays a doubleheader at Harrisburg on Friday starting at 5 p.m. They will then conclude the regular season with a doubleheader at Aberdeen on Saturday starting at 2 p.m.

Game 1: Brandon Valley 17, Brookings 10

An eight-run bottom of the fourth inning proved to be the difference in the first game as the Lynx came out on top.

Brookings jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Elias Wagner scored on a ground out by Owen Rounds and then John Romsa came home on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Weston Diers scored on a double from Mason Hegerfeld and Hegerfeld scored on a wild pitch to stretch the lead to 4-0.

Brandon Valley answered with seven runs in the bottom of the first. An RBI double and RBI single made it 4-2. Then a run from a wild pitch and two runs from an error gave the Lynx the lead. Another run from a wild pitch and an RBI single made it 7-4 heading into the second.

The Lynx added another run in the bottom of the second on an error. Brookings then cut the lead in half in the top of the third as Romsa scored on an error by the catcher and Diers scored on a ground out from Hegerfeld to make it 8-6.

Brandon scored another run on an error in the bottom of the third to make it 9-6. Brookings scored two runs in the top of the fourth on two bases-loaded walks to make it 9-8.

The Lynx would stretch their lead to 17-8 in the bottom of the fourth. The first run of the inning came home on a ground out and then runs from an error and a single made it 12-8. A two-run double and an RBI double made it 15-8 and then a steal of home and a run from a ground out made it 17-8.

Brookings scored two runs in the top of the fifth but was unable to score any more the rest of the way. Cade Jaacks hit Hegerfeld home with a single and then Wagner drew a walk with the bases loaded to make the final 17-10.

THe Bombers had eight hits. Hegerfeld and Wagner were each 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Romsa was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Jaacks was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Tegan Jensen was 2-for-3 and Diers was 1-for-2. Jay KC was 1-for-3 and Rounds had an RBI without a hit.

Game 2: Brookings 7, Brandon Valley 5

Brookings broke a 4-4 tie with three runs in the top of the sixth and then held off Brandon Valley in the bottom of the inning in game two.

Brandon scored three runs in the bottom of the second. The Lynx had the lead-off batter draw a walk and the next batter followed with a single. Then a run came home on a single and then two runs from wild pitches made it 3-0. Another run from a single in the bottom of the third made it 4-0.

Brookings cut the lead to one in the bottom of the fourth. Hegerfeld reached on an error but was then thrown out on a fielders choice from Bennett Porter. Rounds then hit a single and Porter came home on a single from KC. Rounds scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-3.

The Bombers tied the game in the top of the fifth. Jaacks hit a lead-off single and then stole second. He came home on a ground out from Romsa to make it 4-4.

Hegerfeld was walked to start the sixth inning and then Porter was hit by a pitch. KC was walked to load the bases with one out and Hegerfeld scored on a wild pitch. Porter and KC then each came home on wild pitches to make it 7-4 heading into the final half inning.

Brandon had two walks and a single to load the bases up with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. A run came home on a wild pitch but the next batter flew out to end the game.

Brookings had three hits in the win. KC was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Jaacks was 1-for-2. Rounds was 1-for-3.

Romsa pitched a complete game. He gave up five earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and four walks.
