BRANDON The Brookings Chutes split a junior legion baseball doubleheader with Brandon Valley on Tuesday night.
The Chutes fell 6-4 in game one, but then bounced back with a 14-3 win in game two. Brookings is now 16-10 and will host a doubleheader with Aberdeen on Friday at noon.
Game 1: Brandon Valley 6, Brookings 4
Brookings led 4-3 through three innings but was unable to put any runs on the board the rest of the way.
Each team scored two runs in the first inning. Jude Meendering led off the game with a walk and then he scored on a triple from Nolan Krogman. Noah Lease would then hit Krogman home with a two-out single to make it 2-0.
Brandon Valley scored its first run of the game on an error and then a run on another from a separate error tied the game heading into the second.
Brookings regained the lead with two runs in the top of the third. Meendering hit a lead-off single and then stole second. He then scored on a Krogman single to make it 3-2. Ben Schulte then hit Krogman home with a triple to push the lead to 4-2.
Brandon cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third. The first batter of the half inning was hit by a pitch and then he scored on an error to make it 4-3. A lead-off double in the bottom of the fourth and then a two-out single later in the inning tied the game.
Brandon Valley took the lead in the bottom of the fifth. A single, a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases up with one out. Two runners then came home on a two-out single to make it 6-4 heading into the sixth.
Brookings loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh but then Baker Hanson was thrown out at home after Dixon Dauer hit a ground ball to the third baseman. Tate Sonnenburg then struck out to end the game.
The Chutes had 10 hits in the loss. Krogman was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Schulte was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Lease was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Parker Witte and Meendering were each 1-for-3. Hanson and Sonnenburg were each 1-for-4. Andrew Heinze was 1-for-1.
Lease pitched one inning and gave up two unearned runs on one hit with two strikeouts and one walk. Krogman pitched the next four and a third innings and gave up four runs, two earned, on five hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Sutton Schneider got the final two outs for the Chutes and gave up no runs or hits.
Game 2: Brookings 14, Brandon Valley 3 (4 inn.)
The Chutes jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first two innings and then won the game via the 10-run rule.
All nine of the runs in the first two innings came in the second inning. Hanson and Mason Diers walked to start the inning and Heinze was hit by a pitch to load the bases up. Diers and Hanson then scored on a Schneider single to make it 2-0. Heinze scored on a single from Meendering and Schneider came home on a sacrifice fly from Krogman. Hanson was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and then Diers hit a grand slam over the left field fence to make it 9-0.
Brookings extended the lead to 10-0 in the top of the third. Schneider walked to lead off the inning and then scored on a double from Krogman. Brandon scored a run on a single in the bottom of the inning to make it 10-1. Then a sacrifice fly and another RBI single cut the lead to 10-3.
Lease was hit by a pitch with one out in the top of the fourth and Hanson followed with a single. Diers walked to load the bases up and Heinze was hit by a pitch to make it 11-3. Witte then walked with two outs to make it 12-3. Diers scored on a Meendering single to push the lead to 13-3. Heinze then scored on a wild pitch to make it 14-3 and Brandon Valley was unable to cut the lead under 10 in the bottom of the inning.
The Chutes had seven hits in the win. Diers was 1-for-1 with four RBIs and Meendering was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Schneider and Krogman were each 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Hanson was 1-for-1 with an RBI and Witte and Heinze each had an RBI without a hit.
Meendering pitched all four innings and gave up three earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
