Chutes fall to Renner, split doubleheader with Yankton

The Brookings Junior Legion Chutes went 1-2 in three games over the weekend.

The Chutes lost 12-2 on Friday night to the Renner Sultans. They then played a doubleheader in Yankton and won game one 7-4 before falling 5-1 in game two.

Brookings is now 15-9 on the season and plays a doubleheader at Brandon Valley on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Friday

Renner 12, Brookings 2

The two teams played eight innings even though the Sultans led 7-2 at the end of the seventh.

Brookings broke a 0-0 tie with a run in the top of the third as Jude Meendering scored on an error by the catcher.

Renner took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Sultans scored two runs on a double and then a run from a single made it 3-1.

Baker Hanson scored on an error in the top of the sixth to make it 3-2. Renner got that run back with a run back on an error in the bottom of the sixth to make it a two-run game once again.

Renner then scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh. The first run came from a single and then a two-run single pushed the lead to 7-2.

A run from a hit batter with the bases loaded then an RBI single made it 9-2. Another batter was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two more runs scored on an error to make the final 12-2.

Brookings had just two hits. Meendering was 1-for-2 and Dauer was 1-for-3.

Mason Diers pitched the first seven innings. He gave up seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits with one strikeout and two walks. Dauer got one out in the eighth but gave up five runs, three earned, on one hit with three walks and no strikeouts.

Saturday

Game 1: Brookings 7, Yankton 4

Brookings led 3-1 after the first three innings and that carried the Chutes to the victory in game one.

The Chutes scored two runs in the top of the first. Nolan Krogman scored on an error and then Noah Lease hit Hanson home with a single to make it 2-0.

Yankton scored a run on a double in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead in half but then Tate Sonnenburg scored on a Krogman sacrifice fly to push the lead back to two.

Meendering hit Connor Jones home with a single in the top of the fourth to make it 4-1. Yankton got that run back in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single to make it 4-2.

The Chutes doubled their lead in the top of the fifth. Ben Schulte scored on a Jones sacrifice fly and then Lease scored on an error to make it 6-2.

Yankton made it a two-run game again in the bottom of the fifth. Both runs came from two different errors to make it 6-4.

Schulte hit Hanson home with a single in the top of the sixth to make the final 7-4.

The Chutes had eight hits in the win. Krogman was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Schulte and Meendering were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Lease was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Sonnenburg was 2-for-4. Parker Witte was 1-for-3.

Andrew Heinze pitched five innings and gave up four runs, one earned, on nine hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Hanson pitched the final two innings and gave up no runs or hits with a strikeout and no walks.

Game 2: Yankton 5, Brookings 1

Yankton led 3-1 after five innings and then scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to seal the victory in game two.

Yankton broke a 0-0 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Runs from an error and a wild pitch made it 2-0. Then a run from a double pushed the lead to 3-0.

Brookings lone run came in the top of the fifth. Meendering hit a single and that sent home Witte to make it 3-1.

Yankton scored two in the bottom of the sixth. Both runs came from singles to make the final 5-1.

Brookings had four hits. Meendering was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Lease was 1-for-3.

Hanson pitched four innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Meendering pitched the final two innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits with one strikeout and one walk.
