BROOKINGS The Brookings Bullets 16U team lost all five games that they played in the Buffalo Wild Wings Classic in Brookings over the weekend.
Brookings lost 8-0 to the Sanford Sports Academy on Friday morning and then fell 11-10 to Minnetonka (Minnesota) later in the day. On Saturday, the Bullets lost a pair of games each by the score of 8-0. They lost to West Central first and then fell to Jamestown (North Dakota) later in the day. Brookings then fell to Renner 4-2 on Sunday.
The Bullets are now 7-22 on the season and will play a doubleheader at Pierre on Thursday at 5 p.m.
Friday
Sanford Sports 8, Brookings 0
The game lasted five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Sanford got on the board in the top of the second with a run from a single. Then a two-run triple and a run from a ground out made it 4-0 in the top of the third. Sanford scored four runs in the top of the fourth. They scored their runs on an error, a sacrifice fly, an RBI single and an RBI double to make the final 8-0.
Brookings had three hits. Jace Jaacks was 2-for-2 and Mack Nelson was 1-for-2.
Wesden Van Ede pitched the first three and two thirds innings and gave up eight runs, four earned, on 10 hits with no strikeouts and no walks. Lincoln Helmbolt pitched the final inning and a third and gave up no runs or hits with one strikeout and one walk.
Minnetonka 11, Brookings 10
Minnetonka scored a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh to win the game in the Bullets second game of the tournament.
Brookings scored four runs in the top of the first. All of the runs came on the same play as Jace Jaacks hit a bases-clearing triple and then scored on an error by the right fielder to make it 4-0.
Minnetonka answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning. They scored runs on a single, an error, two wild pitches and then a single to make it 5-4.
The Bullets tied the game in the top of the second as Eli Ellsworth scored on a Camden Reicks single. Minnetonka got that run back on a single in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-6 heading into the third.
Brookings scored three runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead. Grant Horn and Lincoln Helmbolt came home on a Van Ede single and then Nelson scored on a Hesser single to make it 8-6.
Minnetonka scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead. Two runs from an error tied the game and then a run from an error and an RBI single pushed the lead to 10-8.
The Bullets would tie the game in the top of the seventh. Horn scored on a wild pitch and Aidan Adelman came home on an error to make it 10-10 heading into the final half inning. That set up Minnetonka winning the game in the bottom of the seventh.
Brookings had 12 hits. Jaacks was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and Van Ede was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Hesser was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Horn was 2-for-3 as well. Reicks was 1-for-5 with an RBI and Helmbolt was 2-for-5.
Adelman pitched one third of an inning and gave up five runs, three earned, on two hits with three walks and no strikeouts. Nelson pitched four and two thirds innings and gave up five runs, two earned, on five hits with four walks and one strikeout. Hesser pitched the final inning and two thirds and gave up one unearned run on two hits with no strikeouts or walks.
Saturday
West Central 8, Brookings 0
Brookings offense went back to struggling in game three of the tournament.
The Boltz scored two runs in the bottom of the first. The first run came from a hit batter with the bases loaded and then a run from a fielders choice made it 2-0.
West Central then scored five runs in the bottom of the third. They scored runs on a triple, a double, two singles and a steal of home to make it 7-0. Then a run from a sacrifice fly made it 8-0 in the fourth and the Boltz kept Brookings off the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning to win the game via the 10-run rule.
Brookings had three hits in the loss. Ellsworth was 1-for-1, Van Ede was 1-for-2 and Reicks was 1-for-3.
Helmbolt pitched the first three innings and gave up eight earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Ellsworth pitched an inning and gave up no runs and one hit with no strikeouts or walks.
Jamestown 8, Brookings 0
Brookings had four hits in the fourth game of the tournament but was unable to put any runs up again.
Jamestown’s first three runs came in the top of the second on a two-run single and a steal of home. Then an RBI single in the top of the third made it 4-0.
An RBI single and two runs from ground outs made it 7-0 in the top of the fifth. The final run of the game for Jamestown was on a balk by the pitcher in the top of the sixth.
Nelson, Van Ede, Helmbolt and Hesser were all 1-for-3. Jaacks pitched five innings and gave up seven earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Van Ede pitched an inning and gave up one earned run on one hit with one strikeout and no walks.
Sunday
Renner 4, Brookings 2
The two teams combined for 16 hits but the Vultures made more of the opportunities when they had runners on base.
Renner led 3-1 at the end of the second. Hesser scored on a wild pitch in the top of the second for the Bullets. Renner hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning and then runs from a fly out and single made it 3-1.
Another RBI single from Renner in the bottom of the fifth made it 4-1. Jaacks scored on a single from Horn in the top of the seventh but Brookings was unable to score any more runs in the final half inning.
Brookings had nine hits. Horn was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Helmbolt was 3-for-4. Nelson was 2-for-4 and Reicks, Jaacks and Hesser were each 1-for-4.
Nelson pitched two innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits with one walk and no strikeouts. Ellsworth pitched two innings and gave up no runs and one hit with three strikeouts and one walk. Hesser pitched the final two innings and gave up one earned run on three hits with one strikeout and one walk.
