BROOKINGS The Brookings Cubs played their first game at Bob Shelden Field since June 19 on Monday night and came away with a 16-6 win over the Baltic River Dawgs.
Brookings led 8-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning and then scored eight runs to win the game via the 10-run rule.
The Cubs led 1-0 at the end of the first inning. Isaac Bonner hit a lead-off single and then Colin Gibson was hit by a pitch. Each runner advanced on a Chase McDaniel ground out and then Bonner came home on a Rhett Zelinksy sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
Brookings then scored five runs in the bottom of the third. Gibson hit a single to start the inning and then McDaniel followed with a double and Zelinksy reached on an error to load the bases with no outs. Henry Hammrich then hit Gibson and McDaniel home with a double to make it 3-0. Zelinsky came home on a Parker Winghart ground out and Gammrich scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0. Arlen Peters then hit an RBI double to push the lead to six heading into the fourth.
Baltic would cut the lead to 6-5 in the top of the fifth. Brycen Top walked with one out and Cael Swanson followed with a single. Top scored on a ground out and Swanson came home on a Jon Wilhelmsen double to make it 6-2. Kooper Perry then came to the plate with two runners on and blasted one over the left field fence to make it a one-run game.
Brookings would extend the lead to 8-5 in the bottom of the sixth. McDaniel hit a two-out single and Zelinsky followed with a walk. McDaniel scored on a Hammrich single and Zelinsky scored on an error to make it 8-5.
Swanson hit a lead-off single for Baltic in the top of the seventh and then scored on a two-out double from Dalton Garbers to make it 8-6.
Myles Rees hit a lead-off double in the bottom of the inning and Lincoln Vasgaard followed with a walk. Rees scored on a double from Peters and Vasgaard scored on a wild pitch. Isaac Bonner then hit Alec Johnson home with a single to make it 11-6.
McDaniel hit a two-run double and then scored on a single from Zelinsky. Zelinsky scored on an error on the same play to make it 15-6. Nolan Miles walked and Justin Cofell singled to load the bases up. Vasgaard then singled to hit Miles home and end the game.
The Cubs had 17 hits in the win. Hammrich was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and McDaniel was 3-for-5 with two RBIS. Vasgaard was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Peters was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Zelinsky was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Bonner was 2-for-5. Gibson and Rees were each 2-for-3 and Cofell was 1-for-1. Winghart had an RBI without a hit.
Hammrich pitched the first four and two thirds innings. He gave up five earned runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and six walks. Tucker Wookey pitched the final two and a third innings and gave up one earned run on two hits with one strikeout and one walk.
Brookings is now 10-4 on the season. The Cubs host the Sioux Falls Brewers on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
