SIOUX FALLS The Brookings Bombers Red 13U team went 1-1 in their final two games of the Mid-Summer Classic in Sioux Falls on Saturday.
The Bombers lost to Sioux City 11-8 and then took down Lakeville North (Minnesota) 10-9 later in the day.
Brookings is now 9-18 on the season and hosts a doubleheader with Brandon Valley on Thursday starting at 5 p.m.
Sioux City 11, Brookings 8
Brookings led 7-6 heading into the final two innings but then was outscored 5-1 the rest of the way.
Each team scored a run in the first two innings. Sioux City scored a run on a fielders choice in the top of the first and Brookings answered in the bottom of the second as Weston Diers scored on a steal of home in the bottom of the second.
The Futures scored three runs in the top of the third to take the lead. Sioux City hit a two-run double and then an RBI single made it 4-1.
The Bombers tied the game in the bottom of the third. Elias Wagner hit a two-run inside the park home run and then Owen Rounds scored on a Mason Hegerfeld ground out to make it 4-4.
Sioux City regained the lead in the top of the fourth with two runs. The Futures scored a run on a bunt single and then there was an error on the play that scored another run.
Brookings took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Tegan Jensen scored on a steal of home and then Cade Jaacks and Jay KC stole home as well to make it 7-6.
Sioux City scored four runs in the top of the fifth. The Futures hit an RBI triple to tie the game and then hit an RBI single to take the lead. Another run came home on a ground out and then an RBI single made it 10-7.
Brookings scored a run in the bottom of the fifth as Bennett Porter hit John Romsa home with a single to make it 10-8. However, Sioux City made it a three-run game again in the top of the sixth as a run came home on a passed ball.
The Bombers had eight hits in the loss. Wagner was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Porter was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Porter was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Romsa was 1-for-1. KC was 2-for-3 and Cullen Torgrude was 1-for-2. Jaacks, Jensen, Hegerfeld and Romsa were each 1-for-3.
Romsa pitched four and a third innings and gave up eight runs, seven earned, on six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Wagner pitched the final two innings and gave up one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
Brookings 10, Lakeville North 9
Rounds hit KC home with a single in the bottom of the sixth and that won the game for the Bombers in the second game of the day.
Lakeville took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. They hit two RBI singles and then a run from a ground out made it a three-run game.
The Bombers scored two runs in the bottom of the inning. Rounds scored on a wild pitch and then Hegerfeld hit Romsa home with a single to make it 3-2.
Lakeville would increase its lead to 7-2 in the top of the third. They hit a two-run single and then a batter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. One more RBI single made it a five-run game.
Brookings cut the lead to 7-5 in the bottom of the third. Diers hit Wagner home with a single and then Romsa stole home. Diers then scored on a Porter single to cut the lead to two. The Bombers added another run in the bottom of the fourth as Wagner hit Jaacks home with a single.
Lakeville pushed its lead to three in the top of the fifth. A runner stole home and then an RBI single made it 9-6.
Brookings would tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Romsa stole home and Diers scored on an error to make it a one-run game. Jaacks then hit Hegerfeld home with a single to tie the game.
That set up the chance for the Bombers to win the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Brookings had 14 hits in the victory. Hegerfeld, Jaacks and Wagner were each 2-for-3 with an RBI and Rounds was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Porter was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Diers was 1-for-1 with an rBI. Romsa was 2-for-2 and Jensen was 2-for-3.
Torgrude pitched five innings and gave up nine earned runs on 13 hits with two walks and no strikeouts. Rounds pitched the final innings and gave up no runs or hits with one walk and no strikeout.
