Brookings Bombers Black goes 1-2 in final games at Mid-Summer Classic

SIOUX FALLS The Brookings Bombers Black 14U team went 1-2 in its final three games of the Mid-Summer Classic in Sioux Falls over the weekend.

The Bombers lost to Barnesville (Minnesota) 6-4 in their lone game on Saturday. They then beat West Fargo 10-6 in their first game on Sunday before falling to Pierre 8-0 in their final game of the tournament.

Brookings is now 14-16-2 on the season and will host a doubleheader with Sioux Falls West on Tuesday starting at 5 p.m.

Saturday

Barnesville 6, Brookings 4

Barnesville led 3-1 after the first inning and that proved to be the difference in the Bombers game on Saturday.

The Trojans scored a run on a double and then two RBI singles made it 3-0. Ty Delbridge then hit Cooper Drawdy home with a double in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-1.

Barnesville scored three runs in the top of the third. All three runs came from bases-loaded walks to make it 6-1.

Brookings scored three runs in the top bottom of the third. Drawdy hit Ty Johnson home with a double and then Burzlaff scored on an error. Drawdy came home on an error as well to make 6-4 but neither team scored the rest of the way.

The Bombers had five hits. Delbridge was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Drawdy was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Jennings Huntimer was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Hayden Jones was 1-for-3. Johnson was 1-for-4.

Brady Nutter pitched an inning and a third and gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits with one strikeout and no walks. Grayson Wagner pitched two and two thirds innings and gave up three unearned runs on two hits with five strikeouts and five walks. Delbridge pitched two innings and gave up no runs and one hit with three strikeouts and two walks.

Sunday

Brookings 10, West Fargo 6

Brookings led 7-3 through five innings and held West Fargo off in the final two innings.

West Fargo scored a run on a single in the first inning. Brookings scored three runs in the top of the second to take the lead. Dario McSweeney hit Jones home with a double and then scored on a Mason Burghardt single to make it 2-1. Burghardt then came home on a Burzlaff single to push the lead to 3-1.

Brookings extended the lead to 5-1 in the top of the third. Huntimer scored on a sacrifice fly from Jones to make it 4-1 and then a single from Johnson sent McSweeney home with a single to make it a four-run game.

West Fargo cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning. They scored runs on an error and a ground out to make it 5-3.

Brookings would get those two runs back in the top of the fifth. Burghardt came home on an error and then Johnson scored on a Burzlaff single to make it 7-3.

West Fargo hit an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-4.

Brookings extended the lead to 10-4 in the top of the seventh. Burghardt scored on a Burzlaff single and Drawdy hit Johnson home with a single to make it 9-4. Burzlaff then came home on an error to extend the lead to 10-4 heading into the final half inning.

West Fargo scored runs on two RBI singles in the bottom of the seventh but that was it and Brookings hung on for the win.

The Bombers had 12 hits. Burzlaff was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Johnson was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Jones and McSweeney were each 2-for-4 with an RBI and Burghardt was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Drawdy was 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Drawdy pitched six and a two thirds innings and gave up six runs, one earned, on 10 hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Pierre 8, Brookings 0

Brookings had just two hits and couldnt get its offense going in the second game of the day on Sunday.

Pierre jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. They scored all of their runs from two different errors. Pierre then scored a run from a single and a runner stole home to make it 6-0. In the bottom of the fourth two more runs came home on two separate errors to make the final 8-0.

Burzlaff was 1-for-1 and Delbridge was 1-for-2. Burzlaff pitched a complete game and gave up eight runs, three earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
