MAPLE GROVE, Minn. The Brookings Bandits went 2-3 in the Gopher Classic in Minnesota over the weekend.
The Bandits split a pair of games on Friday, falling to Hauptman OBrien (Bellevue, Neb.) 7-6 and then beating East Ridge (Woodbury, Minn.) 7-5. They then lost to Manitoba (Canada) 4-2 in their first game on Saturday before beating Maple Grove (Minnesota) 14-12 later in the day. In Brookings final game of the weekend the Bandits lost to Rock Island (Illinois) 16-4.
Brookings is now 16-18 on the season and will play a doubleheader at Watertown on Tuesday starting at 5 p.m.
Friday
Hauptman OBrien 7, Brookings 6
Hauptman OBrien scored all seven of its runs in the final two innings to earn the win in the Bandits first game of the tournament.
Brookings led 3-0 through two innings. Jay Harris hit Tyson Antonen and Maxten Jensen home with a triple in the first inning. Then Tane Friedrich scored on a passed ball in the second to push the lead to three.
The Bandits lead stretched to 6-0 in the top of the sixth. Ryan Lockrem came home on a passed ball and then Nolan Wagner scored on a Jon Kahler sacrifice bunt to make it 5-0. The final run of the inning came when Ryder Anderson scored on a wild pitch.
HOB cut the lead in half in the bottom of the sixth. They scored a run on a double and then runs from a passed ball and a single made it 6-3.
Runs from a single and a hit batter with the bases loaded made it a one-run game in the bottom of the seventh. HOB then tied the game with an RBI single and then another RBI single won them the game.
Brookings had six hits. Harris was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Talon Hyde and Jensen were each 1-for-1. Kahler and Friedrich were each 1-for-2 and Antonen was 1-for-3.
Hyde pitched the first four and two thirds innings and gave up no runs and three hits with one strikeout and three walks. Jase Bauer pitched two thirds of an inning and gave up three earned runs on two hits with three walks and no strikeouts. Tre Christopherson pitched an inning and a third and gave up four runs, two earned, on five hits with two walks and no strikeouts.
Brookings 7, East Ridge 5
Brookings had a big lead again in game two of the tournament as the Bandits led 7-0 through four innings. This time they hung onto the lead and earned the win.
Antonen came home on an Anderson sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second to make it 1-0. Kahler then scored on a Bauer single in the bottom of the third and Christopherson came home on a Antonen fielders choice later in the inning.
Harris scored on a Christopherson single in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-0. Later in the inning Kahler scored on a Cooper Schneider double and then Schneider scored on a wild pitch to push the lead 7-0.
East Ridge got on the board in the top of the sixth on an RBI single. Then a run came home on a wild pitch and a bases-clearing double made it 7-5 in the top of the seventh. The Bandits kept them off the scoreboard the rest of the inning and picked up their first win of the tournament.
The Bandits had six hits again. Christopherson was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Schneider was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Antonen was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Bauer was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Kahler was 1-for-2 and Anderson had an RBI without a hit.
Kysin Reuer got the start for the Bandits and pitched five and two thirds innings. He gave up one earned run on two hits with five strikeouts and five walks. Winston Plummer pitched an innings and gave up four earned runs and no hits with three walks and no strikeouts. Anderson got the final out of the game and gave up no runs and two hits with no strikeouts or walks.
Saturday
Manitoba 4, Brookings 2
Manitoba led 3-0 through four innings and staved off a comeback by Brookings.
Manitobas first run of the game came in the bottom of the third on an error. Then a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth made it 3-0.
Brookings scored its two runs in the top of the fifth. Harris scored on a Kahler single and then Kahler came home on a Schneider single to make it 3-2.
Manitoba scored a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning and neither team scored the rest of the way.
Brookings had five hits in the loss. Schneider was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Kahler was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Antonen and Plummer were each 1-for-3.
Lockrem pitched a complete game for the Bandits. He gave up four runs, three earned, on eight hits with one strikeout and four walks.
Brookings 14, Maple Grove 12 (8 inn.)
It was a back-and-forth affair and the Bandits scored three runs in the top of the eighth and held off Maple Grove in the bottom of the inning to earn the win in game four of the tournament.
Maple Grove scored a run on an error in the bottom of the second and then each team scored four runs in the third.
Kahler and Wagner scored on a single from Christopherson in the top of the third. Later in the inning Christopherson scored on a Antonen single and then Harris was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 4-1.
Maple Groves runs came from an RBI single and a two-run single and a ground out to make it 5-4 heading into the fourth.
Brookings tied the game in the top of the fourth when Plummer hit Kahler home with a single.
Maple Grove then scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead. They scored a run on a passed ball and then two bases-loaded walks made it 8-5. Then a two-run single pushed the lead to 10-5 heading into the fifth.
Brookings would cut the lead back to one in the top of the sixth. Plummer hit Christopherson home with a double and then scored on a wild pitch. Harris then hit Hyde home with a double and Reuer stole home to make it 10-9.
Maple Grove scored a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth but then Brookings tied the game in the top of the seventh. Christopherson scored on a Plummer sacrifice fly and then Hyde tied the game by hitting Schneider home with a single. Brookings then kept Maple Grove off the board in the bottom of the inning and the game went to extras.
Reuer scored on a Kahler single to give the Bandits the lead and then Hyde scored Kahler and Lockrem with a single to make it 14-11 heading into the bottom of the eighth. Maple Grove hit a sacrifice fly to make it 14-12 and then had two runners on with one out. However, Jensen struck out the next two batters to seal the extra-inning victory for the Bandits.
Brookings had 16 hits. Hyde was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Plummer was 2-for-6 with three RBIs. Harris was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Christopherson was 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Kahler was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Antonen was 2-for-6 with an RBI. Schneider was 2-for-6 and Wagner was 1-for-3.
Wagner pitched the first four innings and gave up 10 runs, eight hits, on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Harris pitched the next two innings and gave up one earned run on one hit with one strikeout and three walks. Jensen pitched the final two innings and gave up no runs and two hits with three strikeouts and no walks.
Sunday
Rock Island 16, Brookings 4 (6 inn.)
Rock Island scored 10 runs in the sixth and won the game via the 10-run rule in the final game of the tournament for the Bandits.
Each team scored three runs in the third. Rock Islands runs came from a two-run single and an RBI single. Brookings answered with an RBI single from Antonen and a two-run single from Jensen.
Each team scored a run in the fourth. Rock Islands came from a sacrifice fly and then Kahler scored on an error to make it 4-4 heading into the fifth.
Rock Island regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth. The first came from a fielders choice and then an RBI double made it 6-4.
Two solo home runs pushed the lead to 8-4 in the sixth. Then a two-run single and an RBI single made it 11-4. Runs from a fielders choice and a single made it 13-4 and then a three-run home run made it 16-4 and that would be the final.
The Bandits had six hits in the loss. Jensen was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Antonen was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Reuer, Christopherson and Breck Wilson were each 1-for-3 and Plummer was 1-for-2.
Schneider pitched three innings and gave up three earned runs on five hits with two walks and no strikeouts. Antonen pitched two and a third innings and gave up seven earned runs on four hits with six walks and no strikeouts. Christopherson pitched the final two thirds and gave up six unearned runs on four hits with no strikeouts and no walks.
