Brookings 14U, 13U teams begin Mid-Summer Classic with victories

SIOUX FALLS The Brookings Bombers Black 14U and Red 13U teams began the Mid-Summer Classic in Sioux Falls on Thursday night at Harmadon Park.

Bombers Black went 2-0 with wins over Yankton and Sanford Academy Black. Bombers Red beat Brandon Valley in their opening game of the tournament.

Bombers Black is now 13-14-2 on the season. Theyll play Barnsville (Minnesota) on Saturday at 9 a.m. Bombers Red is now 8-17 and plays Sioux City on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Later in the day theyll play Lakeville North (Minnesota) at 5:30 p.m.

Bombers Black 14U

Brookings 13, Yankton 1 (4 inn.)

The Bombers scored six runs in the fourth innings to win via the 10-run rule.

Brookings led 4-0 after the first inning. Mason Burzlaff hit a one-out double and Cooper Drawdy followed with a walk. Burzlaff then stole home and Ty Delbridge walked and Hayden Jones singled to load the bases up. Jennings Huntimer then walked and Grayson Wagner was hit by a pitch to make it 3-0. Ty Johnson walked as well to push the lead to 4-0.

Yankton cut the lead to 4-1 in the top of the third to make it 4-1. However, Brookings scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-1. Jones walked to lead off the inning and Wagner singled and Johnson walked to load the bases up with one out. Jones scored on a Carter Nielsen single and Wagner came home on a Mason Burghardt fielders choice to make it 6-1. The final run of the inning was from a balk by the pitcher as Johnson scored.

The Bombers would stretch the lead to 13-1 in the bottom of the fourth and that ended the game. Burzalff walked and then scored on a steal of home. Delbridge walked as well and scored on a Huntimer double to make it 9-1. Huntimer came home on a Wagner single and then Burghardt was walked with the bases loaded to push the lead to 11-1. Dario McSweeney hit Johnson home with a single and then the final run of the game was scored by Nielsen on a wild pitch.

Brookings had seven hits. Wagner was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Huntimer was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Nielsen was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Dario McSweeney was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Burzlaff and Jones were each 1-for-2. Burghardt had two RBIs without a hit and Johnson had an RBI without a hit.

McSweeney pitched all four innings. He gave up one earned run on one hit with four strikeouts and three walks.

Brookings 15, Sanford Black 4

The Bombers kept putting up runs in the second game of the tournament as they pulled away from Sanford Black and came away with another 10-run rule victory.

Brookings scored three runs in the top of the first. McSweeney and Burzlaff were walked and Drawdy was hit by a pitch to load the bases up with no outs. McSweeney scored on a wild pitch and Burzlaff came home on a Delbridge ground out. An RBI double from Jones then made it 3-0.

The Bombers scored two more runs in the second. Brady Nutter hit a one-out single and McSweeney followed with a walk. Nutter scored on a Burzlaff single and McSweeney came home on a Delbridge single to make it 5-0.

Sanford got on the board with two runs from a single in the bottom of the inning. They then scored another run on a single in the bottom of the third to make it 5-3.

The Bombers pushed four across in the top of the fourth. Drawdy drew a two-out walk and then scored on a Delbridge single. Jones singled and Huntimer walked to load the bases. Delbridge scored on a Wagner single and then Huntimer and Jones came home on a Johnson single to make it 9-3.

Brookings scored six more in the top of the fifth. Burzlaff hit a one-out single and then Drawdy and Delbridge walked to load the bases up yet again. Burzlaff scored on a Jones fielders choice and then Drawdy and Jones scored on a Huntimer single to make it 12-3. Johnson hit an RBI single and Nutter followed with a two-run single to push the lead to 15-3.

Sanford would score a run on an error in the bottom of the fifth but was unable to cut the deficit under 10 and the game ended.

The Bombers had 13 hits in the win. Johnson was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and Delbridge was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Jones and Nutter were each 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Huntimer was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Burzlaff was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Wagner was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Jones pitched the first four innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on three hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Johnson pitched one inning and gave up one unearned run and no hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Bombers Red 13U

Brookings 15, Brandon Valley 8

Brookings led 7-3 through four innings and then outscored Brandon Valley 8-5 in the final inning.

The Bombers led 3-0 at the end of the first inning. John Romsa and Weston Diers hit back-to-back singles with one out. Romsa scored on a double from Mason Hegerfeld and then Bennett Porter hit both Diers and Hegerfeld home with a single.

Brookings added to its lead in the top of the second. Jax Sonnenburg hit a lead-off double and then scored on an Elias Wagner double to make it 4-0.

Brandon Valley cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second. The Lynx had a lead-off walk and then single put two runners on with two outs. Both runners came home on a double to make it 4-2. Brandon added another run in the bottom of the third to make it 4-3.

Brookings extended the lead 7-3 in the top of the fourth. Sonnenberg hit a one-out single and then was thrown out on a fielders choice by Cullen Torgrude. Cade Jaacks hit a single of his own to put two runners on with two outs. Torgrude scored on a steal of home and Jaacks scored on a Wagner single to make it 6-3. OWen Rounds then hit Wagner home with a single to push the lead to four.

Romsa walked to start the fifth inning and then Hegerfeld singled and Porter walked to load the bases up with one out. Tegan Jensen hit Diers home with a single then Torgrude was walked with the bases loaded to make it 9-3. Jaacks and Wagner both walked as well to make it 11-3 and then Rounds hit a two-run double to push the lead to 13-3. Romsa hit Wagner home with a single and Rounds then stole home to make it 15-3.

Two Brandon Valley runners stole home in the bottom of the fifth to make it 15-5. A bases-clearing double made it 15-8 but the Lynx werent able to score any more runs and the Bombers came away with the win.

The Bombers had 15 hits in the victory. Wagner was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Rounds was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Romsa was 3-for-3 with an RBI and Hegerfeld was 2-for-4 with an rBI. Porter was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and Jaacks was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Sonnenburgh was 2-for-2 and Diers was 1-for-3. Torgrude had an RBI without a hit.

Porter pitched four innings and gave up five earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and seven walks. Jaacks pitched the final inning and gave up three earned runs on two hits with one strikeout and three walks.
