SIOUX FALLS The Brookings Bandits were swept in a legion baseball doubleheader against Sioux Falls West on Wednesday night.
The Bandits lost the first game 7-4 and then SF West took game two 8-5. Brookings is now 14-15 and will play in the Gopher Classic in Minnesota this weekend.
Game 1: SF West 7, Brookings 4
SF West pulled out to a 3-0 lead in the first two innings and that ended up being the difference in game one.
Caden Voss and Jack Hille hit back-to-back one-out singles in the top of the second. Jacob Dunn then hit Voss home with a single and Hille scored on a double from Boston Bryant to make it 2-0. Then Dunn scored on a Chris Logue single to push the lead to three.
Brookings got two runs back in the top of the third. Jon Kahler reached on an error to start the inning and then advanced to second on a different error. Tre Christopherson walked to put two runners on with two outs and Winston Plummer hit both runners home with a double to make it 3-2.
SF West scored one run in the bottom of the third. Ian Stokes hit a lead-off single and then scored on a passed ball to make it 4-2. Another run on a fielders choice in the bottom of the fourth pushed the lead to 5-2.
Hille was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the fifth. Dunn followed with a walk and Bryant was hit by a pitch as well to load the bases up. Beckett Whitlock was hit by a pitch two batters later to score a run and then Dunn scored on an error to make it 7-2.
Brookings scored two runs in the top of the sixth but that was it the rest of the way. Cooper Schneider led off with a walk and Jase Bauer was hit by a pitch two batters later. Schneider scored on a Talon Hyde single and then Kahler was walked with the bases loaded to make the final 7-4.
The Bandits had four hits in the loss. Plummer was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Hyde was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Maxten Jensen and Schneider were each 1-for-3 as well. Kahler had an RBI without a hit.
Tyson Antonen got the start for Brookings and pitched three and a third innings. He gave up five earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Nolan Wagner pitched an inning and two thirds and gave up two runs, one earned, on no hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Kysin Reuer pitched the final inning and gave up no runs or hits with one strikeout and one walk.
Game 2: SF West 8, Brookings 5
Brookings led 3-0, but then SF West scored seven runs in the bottom of the third and that allowed a big enough cushion to earn the sweep.
The Bandits went up 1-0 in the top of the first. Christopherson walked and then Schneider and Plummer hit back-to-back singles to load the bases with no outs. Christopherson scored on a Hyde sacrifice fly but that was the only run for the Bandits in the first inning.
Brookings scored two runs in the top of the third. Schneider hit a one-out double and then scored on a Plummer single to make it 2-0. Antonen was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded later in the inning to stretch the lead to 3-0.
SF Wests first three runs of the bottom of the third inning came from a hit batter and two bases-loaded walks and that tied the game. Kyler Boyd then came to the plate and hit a bases-clearing triple to make it 6-3. Dunn followed with a single to push the lead to 7-3.
Antonen hit a two-out single in the top of the fifth and then scored on a Tane Friedrich double to make it 7-4.
Each team then scored a run in the sixth to make the final 8-5. Brookings run came from a single from Bauer and Christopherson scored. SF Wests came from another hit batter with the bases loaded.
The Bandits had 10 hits. Bauer, Hyde, Antonen and Friedrich were all 1-for-3 with an RBI. Plummer was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Plummer was 2-for-3. Christopherson was 1-for-2 and Kahler was 1-for-3.
Breck Wilson pitched the first three innings and gave up seven unearned runs on six hits with two walks and one strikeout. Ryan Lockrem pitched the next two and a third innings and gave up one earned run on one hit with two walks and no strikeouts. Hyde got the final two outs and gave up no runs and had no strikeouts or walks.
