BROOKINGS The Brookings Bombers Black 14U team beat Aberdeen and Sioux Falls West on Wednesday at Bob Shelden Field.
The Bombers had a walk-off 5-4 victory over Aberdeen in game one and then Brookings pulled away from Sioux Falls West for a 10-2 win later in the day.
Brookings is now 11-14-2 and will play in the Mid-Summer Classic in Sioux Falls starting Thursday. The Bombers will take on Yankton at 5 p.m. and then face Sanford Sports at 7:30 p.m.
Game 1: Brookings 5, Aberdeen 4
Cooper Drawdy scored on a Jennings Huntimer ground out in the bottom of the seventh to earn the walk-off victory for the Bombers against Aberdeen.
Brookings struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first. Mason Burzlaff hit a one-out single and then came home on a triple from Drawdy. Ty Delbridge then walked and Hayden Jones hit Delbridge home with a single to make it 2-0 heading into the second.
Aberdeen got on the board in the top of the third. The Smittys hit a two-out single and then that runner scored on a double to make it 2-1.
The Bombers stretched the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Grayson Wagner hit a lead-off double and Ty Johnson followed with a single. Wagner later scored on a Dario McSweeney sacrifice fly to make it a two-run game again.
The Bombers added another run in the bottom of the fifth. Jones hit a two-out single and advanced to second on an error. He then made his way to third on a wild pitch and scored on a double from Huntimer to make it 4-1 heading into the sixth.
The Smittys tied the game in the top of the sixth. The first run of the inning came on a fielders choice and then a run from an error cut the lead to 4-3. Then an RBI double tied the game.
Drawdy led off the bottom of the seventh with a single. He stole second and made his way to third on a ground out from Delbridge. Thats what allowed him to come home on the Huntimer ground out to end the game.
Brookings had eight hits in the win. Huntimer was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and Drawdy was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jones was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Burzlaff, Wagner and Johnson were each 1-for-3. McSweeney had an RBI without a hit.
Drawdy pitched the first five innings and gave up one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Delbridge pitched the final two innings and gave up three unearned runs on three hits with no strikeouts or walks.
Game 2: Brookings 10, SF West 2
Brookings pulled away late from SF West in the second game to claim another victory.
SF West scored a run in the top of the first. They hit a lead-off single and then a runner walked. Then with one out the lead-off runner scored on a ground out to make it 1-0.
SF West doubled its lead in the top of the second with a run from an error. Neither team scored the next two innings and then Brookings tied the game in the bottom of the fourth.
Both runs for the Bombers in the fourth came with two outs. Delbridge drew a walk and then scored on an error. Jones reached on that error and then scored on a Huntimer triple to make it 2-2.
The Bombers broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth and they poured it on after doing so, scoring eight runs in the inning. An error, walk and intentional walk loaded the bases for Brookings with no outs. Jones scored on a Johnson single and then Mason Burghardt walked to make it 4-2. Wagner came home on a Brady Nutter ground out and Burzlaff and Drawdy were walked with the bases loaded to make it 7-2. McSweeny, Burzlaff and Drawdy then scored on a wild pitch. The game then ended due to time.
Brookings had four hits and drew 11 walks. Johnson and Huntimer were each 1-for-2 with an RBI. Burzlaff was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Carter Nielsen was 1-for-2. Drawdy, Burghardt and Nutter each had an RBI without a hit.
Wagner pitched an inning and a third and gave up two runs, one earned, on one hit with four walks and no strikeouts. Nutter pitched the final four and two third innings and gave up no runs or hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
