Rock slide closes Black Hills highway

A long holiday weekend didnt stop a rockslide from closing one of the Black Hills most prominent tourist draws.

Spearfish Canyon Highway 14A was closed for much of Sunday after the slide put several boulders directly in the middle of the road. Highway 14A is the main Spearfish Canyon scenic route and is the most direct road connecting Spearfish to Deadwood, the seat of Lawrence County.

South Dakota Department of Transportation officials cleared the road with assistance from the local sheriffs office, the South Dakota Highway Patrol, and Deadwood-based A-1 Drilling and Blasting Inc.

The canyon is now reopened to visitors.
