‘Common-Sense Parenting’ classes underway in Brookings

BROOKINGS The Child and Family Resource Network at South Dakota State University is hosting its next Common-Sense Parenting class series which started July 1.

The free series is designed for parents and individuals who engage with school-age children, kindergarten through 12th grade.

Classes will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays at the Pugsley Center on the SDSU campus. Sessions are planned from early July into August for:

  • Session 2: July 8
  • Session 3: July 15
  • Session 4: July 22
  • Session 5: July 29
  • Session 6: Aug. 5

Parents who have accurate information about development, temperament and social and emotional growth are more likely to experience increased satisfaction and enjoyment in parenting their school-age children.

Class participants will learn how to reduce family stress, support success in school, diminish yelling and fighting, and reduce problem behavior. Parents can also enrich their relationship with their child and increase their and their childs confidence. A new addition to the class this summer is the availability of course materials in Spanish for those who feel more comfortable reading and learning in that language.

Past participants have said they appreciate what they learned and accomplished with the help of the class.

The most useful skill I learned was how to help my child stay calm or calm down, one participant noted.

Planning ahead and talking to my child about expectations beforehand was really helpful to me, another added. I learned what rewards and consequences I could have for my child, and how to be ready to use them.

The certificate awarded for course completion is approved by Court Services and the South Dakota Department of Social Services.

Registration is required for the free classes and can be done online here or by calling 1-800-354-8238 or 605-688-5730, or emailing [email protected]. Parking is available in the lot north of Pugsley.
