Cement truck crash near Volga injures men

VOLGA Two men suffered minor injuries after the loaded cement truck they were in went onto its side on U.S. Highway 14 several miles west of Volga on Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred 3 miles west of Volga at 9:24 a.m. at 46124 Highway 14, according to a Wednesday afternoon news release from the Brookings County Sheriffs Office. The cement truck was a 2020 Kenworth owned by SD Redi Mix, Assistant Sheriff Dave Biteler wrote.

The truck was west bound on U.S. 14 when a mechanical issue occurred, causing the driver to lose control, he wrote in the release. The truck rolled onto the drivers side and slid off the side of the highway.

An inquiry from the Brookings Register to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety found that the driver was a 31-year-old man from Katy, Texas, while his passenger was a 36-year-old man from Brookings. Their names aren’t being released, per the SDDPS, and they both were wearing seat belts.

The driver was taken to Brookings Health System by Brookings Ambulance and was later released. The passenger was taken by private vehicle for an evaluation and was released afterward.

Biteler said no damage estimates for the truck or the highway were available as of late Wednesday afternoon.

Other responding agencies were the South Dakota Highway Patrol, Volga Fire Department and the South Dakota Department of Transportation.

The Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the incident.
