BROOKINGS The Brookings Bombers White 13/14U team swept a doubleheader against the Aberdeen Smittys 13/14U team on Monday afternoon at Bob Shelden Field.
Brookings won game one 12-3 and then had a 10-6 victory in game two. The Bombers are now 17-5 and will play a doubleheader at West Central on Tuesday night starting at 5 p.m.
Game 1 : Brookings 12, Aberdeen 3
Brookings scored seven runs in the fifth inning to pull away and earn the victory in game one.
The Bombers led 2-1 at the end of the first inning. Aberdeen scored a run on an error in the top of the inning. Delton Brownell hit a one-out single in the bottom of the inning and Lucas Kahler was hit by a pitch the next at bat. Brownell came home on a balk by the pitcher and Kahler scored on a Derek Jordan single to make it 2-1.
Brookings extended the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second. Beau Thompson reached on an error to start the inning and then scored on a single from Lincoln Damm to make it a two-run game.
The Smittys tied the game in the top of the fourth. The first run came home on an error and then a run from a passed ball made it 3-3.
Brookings got those two runs back in the bottom of the inning. Kuddyer Baugher hit a lead-off single and then came home on a two-out double from Thompson. Thompson then scored on a single from Damm to make it 5-3 heading into the fifth.
Warner Carroll drew a lead-off walk to start the bottom of the fifth. Hayden Smidt followed with a single and then each runner scored on a Brownell single to make it 7-3. Brownell scored on a single from Baugher and Baugher came home on a double from Jordan to push the lead to 9-3. Landon Mosley ran for Jordan and scored on a single from Griffin Streich and Streich later scored on a wild pitch for the final run of the inning.
That made the final score 12-3 as Aberdeen went down one-two-three in the sixth.
The Bombers had 11 hits. Damm was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Brownell and Jordan were each 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Baugher was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Thompson was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Streich was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Smidt was 1-for-3.
Streich pitched the first five innings and gave up three unearned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Kahler pitched the sixth innings and gave up no hits and had one strikeout and one walk.
Game 2: Brookings 10, Aberdeen 6
Brookings was able to come back from a 6-2 deficit in game two to get the win.
Aberdeen jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The first run of the game came on a single and then runs from an error and a bases-loaded walk pushed the lead to three.
Brookings cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the first. Brownell reached on an error with one out and Jordan followed with a walk. Brownell scored on a wild pitch and Kuddyer Baugher hit a single but Jaxson Neuharth, who was running for Jordan, was caught stealing. Baugher then scored on a single from Hudson Vincent to make it 3-2.
Aberdeen extended its lead to 6-2 in the top of the second. The Smittys scored runs on a ground out and an error to make it 5-2. Then a run from another error made it a four-run game.
The Bombers got one run back in the bottom of the inning. Thompson walked to lead off the inning and eventually came around to score when he stole home.
Jordan hit a lead-off single in the bottom of the third and then scored on a single from Streich to make it 6-4.
Brookings then broke through and scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Mosley hit a one-out single and then scored on an error. Smidt walked with two outs and scored on an error as well to tie the game. Brownell reached on that error and scored on a wild pitch to give the Bombers the lead. Jordan scored on a wild pitch as well and Baugher came home on a Vincent single to make it 9-6.
Mosley was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the fifth and then came home on a ground out from Carroll to make the final 10-6.
Brookings had nine hits. Vincent was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Streich was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jordan was 1-for-1 and Smidt, Baugher, Mosley and Thompson were each 1-for-2.
Smidt got the start for the Bombers and pitched two innings. He gave up six runs, one earned, on three hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Brownell pitched the next two innings and gave up no runs and two hits with no strikeouts or walks. Baugher pitched the final two innings and gave up no runs and two hits as well and had one strikeout.
