YANKTON The Brookings Bombers Red 13U team split a doubleheader in Yankton on Monday afternoon.
The Bombers won game one 8-5 before falling in game two 10-8. Brookings is now 7-17 and will play in the Mid-Summer Classic in Sioux Falls starting on Thursday with a game against Brandon Valley.
Game 1: Brookings 8, Yankton 5
The Bombers scored four runs in the top of the sixth to gain the lead and then held off Yankton in the bottom of the inning to get the win in game one.
Yankton led 3-1 at the end of the first. Owen Rounds reached on a dropped third strike with one out and then scored on a Weston Diers double to make it 1-0. Yankton then scored runs on a two-run single and an RBI single to make it 3-1.
Yankton extended the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the third. They scored each run from an RBI single to make it a four-run game heading into the fourth.
Brookings cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth. Mason Hegerfeld and Bennett Porter each walked to start the inning and then both came home on a Cade Jaacks single to make it 5-3.
The Bombers made it a one-run game in the top of the fifth. John Romsa was hit by a pitch to start the inning and advanced to third on an error. He then scored on a single from Hegerfeld to make it 5-4.
Jax Sonnenburg reached on a dropped third strike to begin the sixth and Cullen Torgrude followed with a walk. Both runners then came home on a triple from Jaacks and then he came home on the throw to give Brookings a 7-5 lead. Romsa later walked and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-5.
Yankton got a runner on with two outs in the bottom of the sixth as he was hit by a pitch but the next batter grounded into a fielders choice to end the game.
Brookings had five hits. Jaacks went 2-for-3 with five RBIs. Diers and Hegerfeld were each 1-for-3 with an RBI and Elias Wagner was 1-for-3.
Porter pitched the first two innings and gave up three earned runs on three hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Torgrude pitched the next two innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Wagner pitched the final two innings and gave up no runs or hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Game 2: Yankton 10, Brookings 8
Game two ended early due to weather, but Brookings was unable to complete a comeback.
Yankton jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. They scored two runs on a single and then runs from an RBI single and a passed ball made it a four-run game going into the second.
Brookings got on the board in the top of the third. Jaacks walked to lead off the inning and made his way to third on a Wagner single. He then scored on a steal of home to make it 4-1. However, Yankton got that run back in the bottom of the inning with a run from a wild pitch.
The Bombers took the lead in the top of the fourth. Porter walked and then back-to-back singles from Tegan Jensen and Sonnenburg loaded the bases up with no outs. Porter scored on a bases-loaded walk and Jensen scored on a fielders choice to make it 5-3. Romsa then cleared the bases with a two-out triple to make it 6-5.
Yankton regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth. A two-run inside the park home run made it 7-6 and then a two-run single pushed the lead to 9-6. One more run from a single made it 10-6 heading into the fifth.
Brookings cut the lead to 10-8 in the top of the fifth but that was the final half inning. Hegerfeld singled and Porter followed with a walk. Hegerfeld scored on a Jensen ground out and then Porter scored on a Torgrued ground out.
The Bombers had five hits. Romsa was 1-for-2 with three RBIs and Wagner was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Jensen was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Hegerfeld was 1-for-3. Torgrude had two RBIs without a hit. Romsa started the game and did not get an out. He gave up four earned runs on three hits with two walks and no strikeouts. Sonnenburg pitched three innings and gave up one unearned run on one hit with four strikeouts and one walk. Romsa pitched one inning and gave up five earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and two RBIs.
