Chutes split doubleheader with Rapid City Post 22

BROOKINGS The Brookings Chutes split a junior legion baseball doubleheader with the Rapid City Post 22 Expos on Friday afternoon at Bob Shelden Field.

Brookings won game one 8-2 and then Rapid City took game two 5-4 to earn the split. The Chutes are now 9-6 on the season and host a doubleheader with Sioux Falls West on Tuesday at 12 p.m.

Game One

Brookings 8, Rapid City 2

The Chutes led 5-1 after the first two innings and were able to hold off the Expos the rest of the way.

Baker Hanson got the scoring going for the Chutes in the bottom of the first as he hit Jude Meendering home. Nolan Krogman scored on the throw to make it 2-0. Hanson then stole home later in the inning to push the lead to 3-0.

Rapid City scored a run on a bases-loaded walk in the top of the second to make it 3-1. Meendering then hit Krogman home with a single to make it 4-1 and Meendering later scored on an error to stretch the lead to 5-1. Noah Lease hit Parker Witte home with a single in the bottom of the fourth to expand the lead to 6-1.

Krogman stole home in the bottom of the sixth and then Ben Schulte was walked with the bases loaded to make it 8-1. Rapid City scored a run on a double play in the top of the seventh to make the final 8-2.

Brookings had nine hits. Hanson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Noah Lease was 2-for-2 with an RBI. Meendering was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Krogman was 2-for-3.

Krogman pitched a complete game. He gave up two earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Game Two

Rapid City 5, Brookings 4

Rapid City led 5-1 after the first five in half innings and staved off a rally from the Chutes in the bottom of the sixth.

Each team scored one run in the second. Rapid City hit an RBI single in the top of the inning and then Mason Diers hit Schulte home with a single to tie the game.

Another RBI single in the top of third gave the Expos the lead and then a sacrifice fly made it 3-1. A run from a fielders choice in the top of the fourth made it 4-1 and an RBI single in the top of the sixth stretched the lead to 5-1.

Hanson and Lease each scored on an error in the bottom of the sixth. Then Schulte came home on a Diers single to cut the lead to 5-4. The Chutes had the bases loaded with two outs later in the inning but Witte was picked off first and the inning ended. Krogman was hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the seventh but the next three batters went down one-two-three and the game ended.

Brookings had just three hits. Diers was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Lease was 1-for-4. Dixon Dauer had two RBIs without a hit.

Lease pitched the first five innings and gave up four runs, three earned, on four hits with three strikeouts and five walks. Diers pitched the final two innings and gave up one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts and one walk.
