SIOUX FALLS The Brookings Bombers Red 13U team went 1-2 in the Sioux Falls Invite over the weekend.
The Bombers lost to the South Dakota Outlaws 8-1 on Friday and then fell 12-0 to Moorhead (Minnesota) 12-0 later in the day. Brookings then beat St. Peter (Minnesota) 9-7 in its final game of the weekend on Saturday.
Brookings is now 6-14 this season. The Bombers host a doubleheader with Renner on Wednesday at 12 p.m.
Friday
SD Outlaws 8, Brookings 1
The SD Outlaws pulled away from the Bombers in the final four innings.
Each team scored a run in the third inning. The Outlaws scored a run on a single in the top of the inning. Then John Romsa hit Elias Wagner home with a single to tie the game.
The Outlaws took the lead with a run on an error in the top of the fourth. An RBI triple and a run from a ground out made it 4-1 in the fifth.
Another run from an error and an RBI triple pushed the lead to 6-1 in the sixth. A run from a ground out and an RBI single in the top of the seventh made the final 8-1.
Brookings had five hits. Romsa was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Wagner was 1-for-2. Owen Rounds and Cade Jaacks were each 1-for-3.
Romsa pitched the first six innings. He gave up six runs, four earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and five walks. Jax Sonnenburg pitched the final inning and gave up two earned runs on three hits with one walk and no strikeouts.
Moorhead 12, Brookings 0 (4 inn.)
Moorhead scored seven runs in the fourth inning to end the game via the 10-run rule.
Moorhead scored two runs in the top of the first on a double. Then another two-run double and an RBI single made it 5-0 in the top of the third.
Another two-run double and an RBI double made it 8-0 in the top of the fourth. A two-run single and an RBI single made it 11-0. An RBI single made the final 12-0 as Brookings was unable to cut the lead under 10 in the bottom of the fourth.
The Bombers had three hits. Bennett Porter was 2-for-2 and Rounds was 1-for-2.
Cullen Torgrude pitched three and two thirds innings and gave up 12 runs, six earned, on 13 hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Sonnenburg got the final out for Brookings.
Saturday
Brookings 9, St. Peter 7
Brookings jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the first two innings and then held off St. Peter the rest of the way.
The Bombers scored three runs in the top of the first. Wagner scored on an error and then Mason Hegerfeld hit Romsa and Rounds home with a single to make it 3-0.
St. Peter tied the game in the bottom of the inning. The first run came from a sacrifice fly and then a run from a ground out and a single made it 3-3.
The Bombers scored five runs in the top of the second. Rounds hit Tegan Jensen home with a single to make it 4-3. Weston Diers hit Rounds home with a single and then Torgrude scored on an error to make it 6-3. Hegerfeld hit Diers and Romsa home with a single to make it 8-3.
St. Peter scored two runs in the bottom of the third. The first came from a triple and then a run from an error made it 8-5.
Rounds came home on a Hegerfeld ground out in the top of the fourth to make it 9-5. Runs from a single and a wild pitch made the final 9-7.
The Bombers had 10 hits. Hegerfeld was 2-for-3 with five RBIs and Diers was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Rounds was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Jensen was 2-for-3. Romsa was 1-for-3.
Porter pitched the first four innings and gave up five runs, four earned, on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Jaacks pitched the final two innings and gave up two earned runs on two hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
