Bombers Gray goes 1-2 at Brookings Auto Mall Classic

BROOKINGS The Brookings Bombers Gray 13/14U team went 1-2 in the Brookings Auto Mall Classic over the weekend.

The Bombers lost 13-3 to Pierre on Friday and then lost to the Sioux Falls Chargers 18-6 on Saturday. Later on Saturday Brookings beat Brandon Valley 9-8 in the final game of the tournament.

Brookings is now 4-12 and plays a doubleheader at Flandreau at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

Friday

Pierre 13, Brookings 3 (5 inn.)

Brookings walked 11 batters in the first game of the tournament and that led to the loss.

Pierre scored five runs in the top of the second to break a 0-0 tie. The first two runs came on a double and then an RBI triple made it 3-0. A run came home on a wild pitch and another run scored on a ground out to make it 5-0.

Brookings scored a run in the bottom of the second. Liam Johnson scored on a single from Rocco Murano. Then Jay KC scored on a steal of home in the bottom of the third to make it 5-2.

Pierre then stretched the lead to 10-2 in the top of the fourth. Two runs came home on a triple and then a run from a wild pitch made it 8-2. Then an RBI double and a run on a walk made it an eight-run game.

Jess Johnson scored on an error in the fourth to make it 10-3. Then a run from a passed ball and an RBI double ended the game due to the 10-run rule.

Brookings had five hits in the loss. Murano was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Logan Scharr was 1-for-1. KC and Johnson were each 1-for-2 and Brayden Brintnall was 1-for-3.

Shinji Numata pitched three innings and gave up nine earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and seven walks. KC pitched the final two innings and gave up four runs, two earned, on two hits with two strikeouts and four walks.

Saturday

SF Chargers 18, Brookings 6 (4 inn.)

Sioux Falls scored 13 runs in the third and fourth innings combined and that led to the 12-run win for the Chargers.

The Chargers led 5-0 at the end of the first inning. An RBI single and two runs from a dropped third strike made it 3-0. Then runs from a ground out and an RBI double made it 5-0.

Scharr hit KC home with a double in the top of the third to make it 5-1. Then Sioux Falls extended the lead to 12-1 in the bottom of the inning. The first two runs came from a ground out and fielders choice. Two RBI singles and an RBI double made it 10-1. Then runs from an error and a single pushed the lead to 12-1.

Brookings scored five runs in the top of the fourth. Teagan Wallace hit Numata home with a single and then Collin Andrews scored on an error. Wallace stole home and KC and Brintnall scored on an error to make it 12-6.

Sioux Falls put the game away with six runs in the top of the fourth. Two runs came home on a double and then a bases-loaded walk sent across another run. Another run came home on a ground out and a two-run double ended the game.

Brookings had 10 hits. Scharr was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and KC was 2-for-3. Wallace was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Johnson, Numata and Andrews were each 1-for-2. Brintnall was 1-for-3.

Brookings 9, Brandon Valley 8

Brookings fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first but came back to win the final game of the tournament.

The first run of the game scored on an error and then runs from a single and an error made it 3-0. Another RBI single pushed the lead to 4-0 in the top of the third.

Brookings scored five runs in the bottom of the third to take the lead. Kale Weiker hit Wallace home with a single and then KC scored on a Johnson single. Weicker was then walked with the bases loaded and Johnson scored on a Murano single to make it 5-4.

The Bombers extended the lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the fourth. Weicker hit KC home with a single and then Weicker scored on a Numata single to make it a three-run game.

Brookings scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Brintnall scored on an error and then KC scored on a steal of home to make it 9-4.

Brandon would score four runs in the top of the sixth but was unable to come all the way back. The Lynx scored on a double and a ground out to make it 9-6. Then runs from an error and a single cut the lead to 9-8 but they were unable to score any more runs.

The Bombers had 10 hits. Numata was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and Murano was 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Weiker was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and KC was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Johnson was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Johnson was 2-for-3.

Johnson pitched five and two thirds innings and gave up eight runs, two earned, on 10 hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Numata got the final out of the game for Brookings.
