Rounds, Thune don’t have enough courage to stand up to Trump

I voted for Mike Rounds. I voted for John Thune. I knew that they were good men. I was confident they would have the courage to stand up to Trump, to provide the necessary guardrails if Trump actually followed through with his campaign threats of dictatorship and retaliation.

What a disappointment our senators have been. It has become impossible for me to defend their silence and inaction to my Democratic friends.

It appears that Trump would prefer to assume the role of king rather than that of president.

So, what would he like his Republican cohorts in the Senate to assume?

I think Trump would be delighted if they would assume the role of subservient vassal: to kiss his ring, bend the knee, lick his boots, to do whatever he commands of them. For example: You must pass my Big Beautiful Bill.

Of course, Trump cannot force our senators to assume this role. They must willingly agree to it. It appears that this is exactly what they have done.

Their obedient silence implies complicity or cowardice or both.

On June 14, I participated in the No Kings rally. I am an 81-year-old woman. Because I have health issuses, I needed the assistance of my daughter in order to participate in the protest. But I felt it was my duty to publicly express my displeasure.

The familiar dictum comes to mind: The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.

What a sad commentary it is on the state of our nation when old women have to walk the streets in protest because our able-bodied senators are too timid to stand up to their corrupt, vindictive leader. They are afraid to say to his face, boldly and publicly, Enough is enough! No more!

Perhaps it is time for us to elect legislators who will take their oath of office seriously, who will choose to place loyalty to our country and our Constitution over loyalty to our party.
