Brookings Bullets lose two close games in doubleheader against Tea

TEA The Brookings Bullets lost a pair of one-run games to the Tea Titans in a 16U baseball doubleheader on Tuesday night.

Tea came back to win both games as the Titans won game one 8-7 and then took game two 10-9. Brookings is now 7-13 on the season and plays a doubleheader at Watertown on July 1 at 5 p.m.

Game 1: Tea 8, Brookings 7 (8 inn.)

Tea scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and then won the game in the eighth.

The Titans broke a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the third with two runs. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out. Two more walks brought two runs home and made it 2-0.

Brookings answered with two runs of its own in the top of the fourth. Wesden Van Ede hit a one-out single and then Jace Jaacks hit a two-out single to put two runners on. Both runners would then score on a Camden Reicks single to make it 2-2.

Tea regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Titans hit a lead-off single and that runner eventually came home on a single to make it 3-2.

The Bullets struck for five runs in the top of the sixth. Rylan Hesser hit a one-out single and then Jaacks walked and Reicks singled to load the bases up. Aiden Adelman then walked to tie the game and Lincoln Helmbolt hit Reicks and Jaacks home to make it 5-3. Adelman scored on a sacrifice fly from Grant Horn and Eli Ellsworth hit Helmbolt home with a single to push the lead to 7-3.

Runners reaching on a single, an error and a walk loaded the bases up with one out for Tea in the bottom of the seventh. Two runs then came home on an error and another scored on a ground out to make it a one-run game with two outs. The Titans then came through with an RBI double to tie the game and the game went into extra innings.

Adelman walked to lead off the top of the eighth but was caught stealing. Helmbolt then grounded out for the second out of the inning. Horn and Ellsworth walked with two outs but Mack Nelson hit a ground out to end the half inning.

The Titans hit a one-out triple and then intentionally walked the next two batters to load the bases up. The next batter hit a ground ball to Helmbolt on the pitchers mound and he threw it home for the second out. However, Tea then ended the game with a single.

Brookings had 11 hits. Reicks was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Helmbolt was 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Ellsworth was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Hesser was 2-for-4. Jaacks was 1-for-3 and Van Ede was 1-for-4. Adelman and Horn each had an RBI without a hit.

Game 2: Tea 10, Brookings 6

Tea scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth and then held off the Bullets in the top of the seventh in game two.

Tea scored one run in the bottom of the second. The Titans hit a lead-off double and then that runner scored on an error to make it 1-0.

Brookings responded with two runs in the top of third. Jaacks hit a single to start the third and then stole second and third. He scored on an error from the catcher to tie the game. Brennan Cordes was hit by a pitch with two outs and then scored on a Helmbolt single to make it 2-1.

The Bullets extended the lead to 5-1 in the top of the fourth. Nelson, Van Ede and Hesser each singled to load the bases up with one out. Nelson scored on a fielders choice and Van Ede came home on an error. Cordes was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it a four-run game.

Tea cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fifth. The Titans hit a one-out single and then that runner scored on another single to make it a three-run game.

The Bullets got that run back in the top of the sixth. Hesser singled to lead off the inning and then advanced to second on a Hesser walk. Cordes walked as well to load the bases up with two outs and then Hesser scored on a wild pitch.

Tea would then come back and take the lead in the bottom of the inning. A runner reached on an error and then back-to-back singles loaded the bases with no outs. Two runners came home on a single and then an RBI single made it a one-run game. The next batter walked and that loaded bases up again and another walk tied the game. Then a run from a fielders choice made it 7-6. A bases-clearing double extended the lead to 10-6 heading into the final half inning.

Horn, Ellsworth and James Murray all walked to begin the top of the seventh. Horn scored on a wild pitch and then with two outs Reicks was hit by a pitch to make it 10-8. Murray would score on a wild pitch to make it a one-run game but Cordes then grounded out to the second baseman to end the game.

The Bullets had seven hits in the loss. Jaacks and Reicks were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Helmbolt was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Hesser was 2-for-4. Nelson and Van Ede were each 1-for-3. Cordes had an RBI without a hit.

Van Ede pitched five innings and gave up four runs, one earned, on six hits with no strikeouts or walks. Ellsworth got the final three outs and gave up six earned runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
