Motorcyclist dies in crash in Sturgis

STURGIS Amotorcyclist died June 18 as a result of a two-vehicle crash on June 16 in Sturgis.

Preliminary crash information indicates Heather Lynne Clifton, 60 and of Newcastle, Wyoming, was driving a 2015 Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling west on Interstate 90 on the Exit 32 off-ramp near its intersection with Junction Avenue. A Ford Taurus driven by Leatrice C. Edwards, 96, of Sturgis, was traveling north on Junction Avenue near the off-ramp. As the motorcycle entered the intersection, it collided with the Taurus, and Clifton became separated from the motorcycle.

Clifton was taken to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries and died June 18 from those injuries. Edwards was not injured. Safety devices a helmet and a seat belt, respectively were in use at the time of the collision.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released so far is only preliminary.

The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
